Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 28 November
Dear Parents and Staff
Last Sunday we concluded the Church’s Liturgical year with the Feast of Christ the King when we acknowledge Jesus as our King and the saviour of all. This leads into the Season of Advent which is a time of waiting for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. If your family is anything like mine, the planning for Christmas celebrations is well under way and it will take us the next four weeks to be prepared for our big day. There’s presents to buy, whose turn is it to host, who is coming and who is bringing what, all to be considered. We put this much effort and preparation into our lunch and celebration but do we do the same for the real reason for the day? Over the next few weeks will you be doing the same in preparation for the one who we have, just last Sunday, acknowledged as the King and saviour of all?
My Lord Jesus, I love You and thank You for this Advent season. Please help me to understand all that You have done for me. Your loving mother held You in her heart and brought You into this world. Help me to do the same.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGS
The AGMs for both the School Board and the P&F were held last Tuesday evening with both groups reporting very successful years. I thank Clare Grosser and Erin Hunter, who will be stepping down from the P&F, for all of the wonderful work that they have done in support of our children and the school community. I also thank Julie-Anne Beasley and Bryn Chilton who will be stepping down from the School Board as their children are moving on to High School next year. As I wrote in my Report to the meeting “I thank you both for your insightfulness and unwavering support of school initiatives.”
We are very fortunate at Notre Dame to have the support of so many families and, whilst I am extremely grateful for the efforts of those who serve on the P&F and Board, I also acknowledge and thank all who assist the school in so many other ways.
THE COMMITTEES FOR 2020
We are very thankful of the support we receive from the members of both Committees and the members of the Leadership Team look forward to working with them in 2020.
SCHOOL CHOIR
Each year at around this time our School Choir has a day away from school entertaining the residents from the Faulkner Park Retirement Village in Cloverdale and the Little Sisters of the Poor Facility in Glendalough. As a thank you for their efforts throughout the year they enjoy a pizza lunch and a play at Braithwaite Park in Mt Hawthorn.
The Choir will perform for members of the Parish at 10.00am on Wednesday 4 December in the Parish Hall.
Congratulations to all members of the Choir for their dedication and commitment to supporting school events throughout the year.
LEADERSHIP SPEECHES
I’m looking forward to hearing the Year Five students present their Leadership speeches next Wednesday, 4 December. I wish them all the best and acknowledge that, whilst only eight are chosen, all have worked very hard on their speeches and all would be worthy Leaders in our school.
CLASS LISTS
It appears that next Wednesday, 4 December is definitely a day for me to mark in my diary. As well as the Choir performance for the Parish and the Year Five Leadership speeches, the Class Lists for 2020 will be published on the school website at 4.00pm on the same day.

YEAR 1 CLASS NEWS
Just four short terms ago we bounded through the door full of energy and bright new school uniforms. We have learnt so much and had lots of fun along the way.
Just in the past few weeks we went on an excursion to Chevron Playground to look at managed, constructed and natural environments along with the six Noongar seasons. The weather was perfect and we loved exploring the amazing playground.
Earlier this term we ventured to Brownes Dairy, a service provider in our community, where we learnt how dairy products go from farm to factory. We got to try lots of yummy yoghurt in the tasting lab and milk a cow.
Constable Care came to visit and taught us what to do in an emergency and who to call. Remember 000 only in an emergency.
We shared a lovely liturgy with Father Quynh and many of our family members all about the beauty of God’s creation. We marvelled at God’s splendour and our place in his spectacular world.
We have been working all year on a special Christmas gift for our family that we can’t wait to give you. It has been a secret but here is a sneak peek.
We have had a wonderful year and there is still a lot of fun and learning to come.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD HAMPER DONATIONS
This week at Monday morning assembly John Harbinson from St Vincent de Paul spoke to the children about how the food hamper donations that were collected from all classes will be distributed to those who are struggling in our local community. We had an outstanding amount of donations and we would like to thank you all for your continued support which enables us to help those who need it the most in our community.

NOTRE DAME SEWING GROUP
Terms 2,3 and 4 have been an enjoyable experience for our small group of keen sewers. The children have been meeting every Monday and Wednesday in the Library learning to sew felt bears. They have been learning the basic skills of sewing on buttons and using blanket stitch to sew the bears together. The children were very excited to see the end results. Together as a group the children decided to make felt Christmas stockings and donate them to St.Vinnies Christmas Appeal. They achieved a fantastic total of approximately 30. I would like to thank the children for giving up their time to come and learn new skills, having lots of laughs and fun.
Also a big thank you to Mrs Kempton for giving up her time to help and support us.

PARENT TV
Stephanie Wicker from Simply Kids explains the difference between a negative punishment procedure and a positive one!
"It’s not fair! I never get to do anything and you get to do whatever you want!" My 11 year old stormed off into his room, slammed the door, continuing to fume and rage for a good while after. I let him go. I could feel the heat of anger burning me up but I stayed put and took some deep breaths to calm myself. These are big steps for me as a parent. A couple of years ago I would have gone after him. I would have rattled off exactly all the things he gets to do. In fact, I would have let him know every sacrifice I’ve ever made for him since the day of his conception. He had really hit a raw nerve. Thank goodness that was the old me.
The tween attitude is all about defining themselves, but that doesn’t mean parents can’t put some limits in place to make life more livable.
