In School this Week...
The Word Wall is a great writing tool in our classroom. I do not expect the students to memorize each word wall word, but they do need to be aware that the words are on the wall, so they can use them as a reference when writing in the classroom. For the first few weeks of school, we will be reviewing the word wall words the students learned in Kindergarten.
This week's word wall words are:
he, she, look, with, at, have, dad, big, am, for
In reading this week, we are reading the story Dee and Me. We will discuss how good readers choose books to read based on their favorite genres and authors. Our phonics focus will be identifying the short e sound and reviewing the short a sound. We will also brainstorm a list of vocabulary words related to houses and our homes.
In math this week, we will continue to practice writing and counting tally marks. We will combine math and science to discuss weather related words, and learn how to use a thermometer to tell the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. We will also practice telling simple one more and one less number stories.
Our Unit 1 Math Test will be on Friday!
This week we will discuss why it is important to learn from each other. We will talk together how we are alike, how we are different and like different things, and we will talk about how each one of us is special and has something that we can teach to and learn from one another.
In the Computer Lab...
The Titus Home and School association has purchased a one year license for BrainPOP, which is a very interactive online source for virtually every subject and topic associated with our elementary curriculum. We are now able to access BrainPOP, BrainPOPjr, and BrainPOP Español for both home and school.
In First Grade, we use the BrainPOPjr site at http://www.brainpopjr.com/ several times a week. Please visit the site with your children at home and encourage them to tell you about the activities we've completed in school.
Here are some videos pertaining to what we have been learning recently in first grade:Homes
