Roadrunner Nation News
April 25
From the Principal
Starting on May 6th your student will take the Smarter Balanced tests in Math and English Language Arts. Our 8th grade students will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment in Science (WCAS).
This is the fifth year our state will administer the Smarter Balanced tests and the second year for the Science WCAS. The results from these tests will give a more accurate picture of whether students are on track to be ready for college or a career. Additionally, this is one of several measurements we use when deciding what type of supports students might benefit from the following year.
In preparation for the Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA) we will have a modified schedule starting May 6th and going through May 24th. Classes will be 1hour and 40 minutes long.
Monday students will have Periods 2, 3 and 4. Tuesday 5, 6 and 7. Lunch will be 11:50-12:20 and 12:25-12:55. These will be determined by our Flex classes and students may have a different lunch during this modified schedule. Wednesdays' will remain the same schedule. Thursday 2, 3 and 4 and Friday 5, 6 and 7.
Research shows us that students benefit from having their tests administered by the teacher they have received instruction from in that subject area. We are asking that parents please try and avoid any appointments or absences during this time. Please be on time.
Parts of the test will require students to listen with headphones or earbuds.
We are excited to see how well our students will do. There has been a lot of great learning happening and this is a great opportunity for our students to show us what they know!

Cell Phone Policy At Goodman
This year has been difficult for our students to make the connection with the new cell phone policy. Many students still pull out their phones during passing and class time. If this continues to be an issue with students we will be making phone calls home to work with you on what steps we can take so that they are not a distraction from the learning going on. Below is the article I have sent in the past explaining our cell phone policy. Thank you,
Use of electronic devices during class time for purposes other than those pre-approved by the teacher, may result in the device being confiscated and held by administration. Students are not allowed to send texts or make calls from their personal devices during the school day without receiving permission from a staff member. Students are not allowed to take photos or videos at school without receiving permission from a staff member.
Appropriate Use / Locations
Before the 5 minute bell in the Commons (use of headphones is allowed)
During class when and where the teacher designates use for learning
Photos & videos with staff & student permission
After school
During Honor Time
Inappropriate Use / Locations
During Emergency drills
PE locker rooms and restrooms
During class without teacher permission
Hallway, office, gym, library and nurse areas
Photos & videos WITHOUT staff and student permission
Wearing headphones in hallways
Bring electronic devices at your own risk. Students are encouraged to lock their devices in lockers during the school day. If a student decides to carry an electronic device on their person, it must be stored out of sight and set to silent mode so that it does not become a distraction to learning.
If the cell phone or personal electronic device is found to be in use during the day without permission, it may be confiscated. On the first offense, the student may pick up the device from the office at the end of the day. On the second offense, the student may also be assigned a lunch detention. On the third or subsequent violations, the student may be assigned other appropriate disciplinary action.
