Biography of Greta Garbo
Greta Garbo was born in Stockholm Sweden on September 18, 1905. She started out her career modeling shorts for a department store. After doing well on camera she received a scholarship to the Royal Dramatic Theatre school in Stockholm. She left the school when she met director Mauritz Stiller who asked her to play a role in his movie, The Legend of Gosta Berling. The film was such a success that she immediately became famous. After a role in Streets of Sorrow, she came to the United States to work for MGM. Garbo's first role in an American film was in The Torrent. She brought in huge profits for the company. Greta Garbo starred in many other films after The Torrent and won many Academy Awards.
Greta Garbo's Impact
Although Greta Garbo made an impact on everyone in the 1920's, her biggest impact was on women. She inspired women through her fashion. Garbo also inspired women to be independent because she never married. She was quoted for saying, "You don't have to be married to have a good friend as your partner for life." Another quote was, "There are some who want to get married and others who don't. I have never had an impulse to go to the alter. I am a difficult person to lead."
