Lil Steamer Families --
My apologies, but a busy week has me quite a bit behind and not enough time to put my thoughts into the principal's note for this week.
One quick update though, we will not run the newsletter next week due to the Thanksgiving break. I wish each of you a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Stay warm!

Communication skills are an important part of children’s development. Teaching effective communication skills to children may help them to express themselves clearly and convey their feelings in a better manner. Children who are too passive are at a higher risk of being picked on. Students who are too aggressive in their interactions have fewer friends. Encourage your child to communicate their feelings to you. Acknowledge their feelings and try to see the situation through their eyes. Make sure that they understand that their feelings are important.
Literacy Corner
Kindergarten – 2nd: Phonics & Decoding strategies
What it is: Phonics instruction teaches the relationships between letters and the sounds that the letters represent. Children’s reading development is dependent on their understanding of the idea that letters and letter patterns represent sounds of our spoken language. “Decoding” is sounding out words using phonics, being able to break words apart into their sounds.
Ways you can help:
- Read with your child.
- Encourage attention to letters and sounds. If stuck on a word, have your child look at the first letter and make the sound. If the word can’t be sounded out, supply the word for them.
- Make letter sounds and have your child write the letter or letters that match the sound.
- Play I-Spy with letters and sounds. For example, “I spy with my little eye something that starts with the letter S.” or “I spy with my little eye something that starts with /b/.”
- Get letter magnets and have fun rearranging the letters to make nonsense words. Ask your child to say the sound of each of the letters in the nonsense word.

- Articulation Station (free)
- Blending Board (free)

3rd – 5th: Increase Vocabulary
What it is: Vocabulary development has a great impact on a child’s ability to read and make meaning from a what they read. It is an important part to a child’s comprehension (understanding the meaning of what they read). Children use the words they know to make sense of what they see in print. Research has shown the difference between effective and less effective readers is the number of words they know and use.
Ways you can help:
- Encourage your child to notice new words when they’re reading or listening.
- Talk about what to do when we discover unknown words.
- Focus on kid-friendly definitions and examples of new words rather than complicated dictionary-style definitions.
- Use kid-friendly synonyms to make sense of new words. Example, “That really big watermelon was humongous!” Then ask your child to think of other things that are also humongous and to come up with other words that also mean big and humongous.
- Practice “word parts”- prefixes, root words, and suffixes. If your child can understand the meaning of different Latin and Greek roots, then they can discover the meaning of other words too!
- Play games that involve vocabulary, like Scrabble, Charades, Hangman or Crossword puzzles.

Help Support Our 3D Printing Lab
Throughout the last few years, FES has moved into the world of 3D printing. In the past, students have created animal, airplanes, and buildings to be 3D printed. 3D printed items have also become a unique part of our morning announcements as students may decorate the table on the screen as they see fit. This year, we implemented a house system into the greatest little elementary school in the universe which allows students to earn points based on their behavior. Students may then spend those earned points on a variety of prizes, such as a 3D printed item. Naturally, offering 3D printed prizes means we are printing a lot more and we are going through material faster. The button below is a link to an Amazon wishlist full of fun and creative filaments that we can use in our printers. When you purchase a roll on the list, it will ship straight to the school! You are not required to donate a roll, but any and all support is very much appreciated.
