Congratulations to Mrs. Maria Kussy!

I am happy to announce Mrs. Maria Kussy as our new Assistant Principal at BSE! She has been at BSE since it opened its doors in 2003. Over the years she has served our students and families as a second grade teacher, third grade teacher, and teacher librarian. Along with that she has supported students, teachers, and administrators in doing what is best for students at BSE. She is ready to partner with me in supporting our students to achieve academic success and to support teachers in best instructional practices. Please welcome Mrs. Kussy to her new role as Assistant Principal at BSE!

A huge THANK YOU to all of our parents, community members, and Boy Scouts from Troop 109 for helping us begin the school year by building new picnic tables for our outdoor learning space and assisting in our building during the first days of school! We appreciate you!!!

NWEA MAP Testing

HSE's Fall NWEA MAP testing window is officially Monday August 16-27, 2021. Your child's teacher will be sharing specifics regarding testing dates for your child's classroom. All kindergarten through fourth grade students will take the Reading and Math assessments.

Bus Evacuation Drill

On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, BSE will work with our Transportation Department to execute a bus evacuation drill. All drills we conduct on the bus or in the building are designed to educate children on what to do if an emergency were to arise. This process will be very controlled and will take place on our campus after all buses arrive in the morning.

Covid Related Reminders

Please remember to send your student to school healthy. If a student is ill and has any of the symptoms of Covid listed below, we encourage you to get your student tested using a PCR test, which is available via Fishers Health Department (COVID Vaccine | Fishers, IN - Official Website) or the Indiana Department of Health (ISDH - Novel Coronavirus: COVID-19 Testing Information). PCR tests are the most accurate and provide less risk of a false positive or negative result. A visit to your physician is also suggested if you feel this is not Covid-related, then a doctor's note would be needed for your student to return to school. Please do not send your child to school ill or while waiting for Covid test results.

Symptoms for which to monitor:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore Throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

Car Rider Reminders

In the morning, we are asking for cars to continue to fill in the line from cone to cone at the main entrance. Please do not stop in the middle to let your child out of the car. For safety purposes is important for your child to exit on the passenger side by themselves. If your child needs additional support, we ask that you park in the spaces in front of door 10 and walk your child to the main entrance. If children choose to eat breakfast, we ask that they go directly to the cafeteria after entering the building from the car rider line.

In the afternoon, we also ask for you to fill the car rider line from cone to cone at the main entrance. Please have your child’s name and grade displayed on the sheet provided by us. It is very important for all adults to stay in the vehicle and for children to enter the car on the passenger side. Similar to the morning process, we ask that you park in the spaces in front of door 10 and receive your child at the main entrance if additional support is needed.

Unless directed by a BSE staff member, please never pass other cars in the line. Safety is the utmost priority.

Finally, If you arrive after 7:40 p.m., please park and walk your child into the Main Entrance to sign-in.

Child Find

What to do if you suspect a disability/Child Find:

If your child is age 2 ½ through 21, attends any school within the Hamilton Southeastern Schools boundaries or you live in our community, and you suspect your child may have a disability, you should contact us for more information.

  • For children at least two and a half years of age, but not yet age-eligible for kindergarten, you should contact the Early Childhood Assessment Team at Brooks School Elementary School, 915-4250.

  • For students who are eligible for kindergarten through age 21, you should contact your child’s teacher, school counselor or building administrator to discuss your concerns and explore the steps to be taken. If your child is not enrolled in public school, you should contact the counselor or building administrator in the building your child would attend if enrolled.

What to do if you suspect a disability/Child find

  • Response-to-Instruction (RtI): Response to Instruction (RtI) is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Work at Brook School Elementary


Social-emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. In our schools we support the whole child which means supporting their social and emotional health. We work to build strong relationships with students which in turn support their academic success.

Remembering the WHY behind specific SEL instruction

Social Emotional Learning happens frequently in our classrooms as learning opportunities present themselves naturally during the school day. Time has been built into our teachers’ schedules for SEL specific instruction to target skills that have been identified by the IDOE as required teaching standards.

We are committed to specific SEL instruction because the research has shown:

  • Students’ brains function more effectively when they feel supported by peers and educators.

  • Students are more likely to take risks and persevere when they feel they belong.

  • Learning increases and students feel more committed to school when they have strong relationships with their educators.

  • Students are more engaged, more persistent, and more successful when the intellectual, social, and emotional aspects of learning are integrated. (Aspen, 2019)

Just like you, we want your child to be successful in school and their future. Each week we will be communicating information about our SEL lessons in our school newsletter.

After Labor Day we will begin our social and emotional learning (SEL) lessons. These lessons come from three different research-based programs (Second Step, MindUP, and Common Sense Media) that are designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, skills for learning, digital citizenship, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy.
