St. Mike's Matters - Thursday Notes

December 14th, 2017 Issue #13

Dear St. Michael Families,

Merry Christmas-almost! We are now reaching the end of Advent journeys, with faith-filled hearts preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas. I hope that your family’s Advent preparations have deepened your relationship with God, drawn you close as a family, and allowed you to reflect on the blessings in your lives. It has been such a blessing for me to witness our students sharing their faith and preparing their hearts throughout this Advent season.

Our students have been hard at work preparing to “wow” you with their gifts and talents tonight for our annual Christmas Program. The school performed this year’s program, God So Loved the World, to the seniors of our parish this afternoon for the Senior Luncheon. What a beautiful gift for the seniors of our parish in preparation for Christmas! I was so proud of the gracious hospitality offered by our 8th grade servers throughout the luncheon. I am especially grateful for the leadership and direction of Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. McKenzieSullivan and all of our elementary teachers. The show starts at 7:00 PM this evening. Please have your elementary children in their classrooms by 6:30 PM and then join us for refreshments in the gym, sponsored by our PTSA.

Please gather with us for our final school Mass of the Advent season at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning. As a reminder, school is dismissed at noon tomorrow.

We are still searching for a chair for our S.M.A.R.T. Gala scheduled for May 5th. As a stewardship parish and school, our gala completely relies upon our parents’ sharing of their God-given time and talents. Our faith-based belief in the centrality of stewardship has been reflected in all aspects of the S.M.A.R.T. auctions over the past 29 years. This is who we are. This beautiful community event is one of the traditions that makes us a “family of families.” It is my prayer that this tradition of stewardship will continue this year. However, all options must be explored given the current absence of a chair, including canceling the auction for this year.

A chair is needed by January 15th in order to plan the gala this year. Consequences of not being able to hold a gala include limiting tuition assistance scholarships through a decreased endowment, a potential tuition increase, not being able to fund needed capital improvements, and not having a Fund A Need project. Mrs. McGill will provide key institutional support as Stewardship Development Director, but we have always relied upon parent stewardship and leadership of the auction. Over this Christmas break please prayerfully look into your hearts to hear if you are called to lead by example and help save this 29-year-old tradition by chairing or co-chairing the gala.

Christmas Blessings,

Connor Geraghty

Notes from the Health Room

Belated thank you to parent/family volunteers who took the time on November 1st to assist with Lions Club Vision & Hearing screenings. The event takes a bit of organizing and it could not have been possible without you! Thank you!

This year, school districts implemented Washington State requirement of near vision screening (Chapter 246-760 WAC). Students requiring rescreening were done in accordance with the new standards, and referral letters (if needed) were sent home for your child to have a comprehensive eye exam.

Additionally, students who needed auditory rescreening were done, with referrals sent for your child to see a specialist, if needed.

Please follow up with referred specialist and ensure your child’s success at school!

Don't throw away those stamps!

Sisters of the Holy Cross use the money raised from the stamps to benefit their Ministry With the Poor fund. Stamps should be trimmed with a 1/4"-1/2" border. Do not try to remove them from the envelopes - just cut off the address information. A tub for the stamps is located outside of the 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms. Stamps will be collected through January 31st.
