Iowa has about 17 times as much farmland as forest. The Mississippi River is to the east and the Missouri River is to the west of the state of Iowa. Iowa’s lowest point is 480 feet above sea level. It’s highest point is Hawkeye Point at 1,670 feet above sea level. Iowa’s major city is Des Moines. Almost one fifth of all the nation’s corn is in Iowa. Iowa’s nickname is Hawkeye. The temperature can change up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Before settlers came, 80 percent of Iowa was covered with prairie grass.
