All about Mrs. Smith
Mrs. Kristin Smith lives in Lyndhurst, Ohio with her husband Ryland and their two children Sadie age 5 and Ryland Jr. age 2. Kristin graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art and received her MA in Art Education from Case Western Reserve University. Mrs. Smith teaches at Ridge and Lake Elementary in the Mentor Public Schools. She is also an adjunct professor of Art Education at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Over the last 15 years, Kristin has taught and volunteered in many unique institutions across Cleveland, including the Ursuline College Art Therapy Department, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Hope Academy East Elementary, St. Angela Merici School in Fairview Park, Richmond Heights Elementary, along with several schools in the Cleveland Municipal School District. In her spare time, Kristin enjoys creating artwork, swimming, gardening, exercising, and traveling. Most of all, she loves teaching and spending time with her family.
Putting Artists in the Classroom, Intro to Art Education
Course Description: As artists, how can we give back to our communities through K-12 education in the arts? This field-based practicum and seminar course provides students from any major with an introduction to the world of Art Education. Students are placed in schools in the Cleveland area, and work with a cooperating teacher or professional mentor there, providing first-hand teaching experience in the studio arts. Through the course, students are taught the principles and practices of Art Education and curriculum/ lesson planning to be used during their teaching experience. Students also learn to document their students’ work and may curate public exhibitions of the work.
