Maker space!!!
On Friday Mr. Wampole's class went to the Makerspace to create Powhatan houses. The only materials available were wooden planks (cardboard strips) and leaves (paper scraps).
Frames First
The goal of the project was to create a structure to prevent their indian (a small green cutout) from getting we after Mr. Wampole tips a cup of water over top of the structure.
Innovative Ideas!
Students started off making a basic frame. Not designs were the same. Bennett and Daniel came up with this lean-to idea that deflects rain.
Next came the "leaves" to fill in the gaps in the frame.
Little by little, the structure got covered.
Then came the "rain test."
After the SLASH came the moment of truth.
Indian completely dry!!!
Everyone's design worked!!!
If the following video does not work, go to Youtube and search for "Mr. W's Class" Our Powhatan House video should be right at the top of the list.

Picture Retake Day will be November 10. If you are not satisfied with your child's picture, return the picture package to school by November 9 and the school will put them on the schedule for a retake on Nov 10. ________________________________

American Indians
In the next nine weeks we will be studying the American Indians including the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo tribes. This pictures shows how a Powhatan village is structured as well as the type of dwellings they lived in.
A Powhatan House
A typical Powhatan house was made of wood and layers of leaves and long grass.
Author Visit

Super Readers!
Some students have already documented 20 books this month! Remember, when you read and record 20 books for each month, your student advances on our super hero board.
Book Talk
Every day small groups read a chapter out of a book and discuss questions about that chapter. Here, the Orange Stars prepare to talk about chapter one in Henry and Mudge.
American Indians
For the next two weeks we will be learning about the American Indian tribes: the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo. Each tribe has unique features that separates them from other American Indian groups around the country.

Our field trip to Shenandoah National Park was fantastic. We had great weather. We searched for all kinds of life within the forest habitat.
This is a salamander. Ask your son or daughter why you should not touch slamanders.
Here, a millipede crawls through on the ground after being discovered under a rock.
These milkweed beetles live in the grassland habitat.
Our guide taught us about Big Meadow.
We ate lunch in the picnic area on top of the mountain
Week of October 10, 2016
Super Readers!!!
Last week we kicked off our Super Reading program. Superman and Supergirl showed up to encourage students to read every day!
Our Super Reader Chart
Each month, when students read 20 books (recorded by parents), they will move up on our Super Reader chart. The goal is to read over 160 books by May.
Farm Day Dress Up!
We had twins show up for Farm Day! Last week we celebrated our hard working farmers by dressing up like a farmer on Wednesday. Thank you for supporting our celebration.
Superhero Reading Chart
Mr. Wampole will be sending a reading chart home at the beginning of every month. I have changed the format slightly for the November chart. Picture books will count as one book per line. Chapter books count as 20 pages per line (record the page numbers to the right). So, for example, if you are reading a chapter book such as The BFG, your first entry might be pg 1-25. The next entry may be pg 26-48 and so on.
