October 25, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Lighthouse families,
We hope everyone had a good fall break and had a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather. We’re now in the second half of our first trimester. Students have been working hard developing their essential questions for their co-created inquiry projects and learning the steps of the 3D design project. I look forward to seeing their projects at the end of the trimester and how they continue to develop each time they design their learning. Join us for curriculum night on November 8 for more insight on co-created inquiry and competencies.
Thank you for helping your student get to school each day on time and ready to learn. Students being present at school, engaging with peers, and facilitators is a critical part of their learning experience.
Reminders and Updates:
- Parking lot: Many of you have noticed that the house in the parking lot has been moved and the high school is preparing to build a new house. The placement of the house will be slightly different. We will continue to block a path through the parking lot for the drop off and pick up line.
- Student Breaks: Each day students take two device-free breaks. This will continue throughout the winter. Please make sure your child comes to school prepared with proper outdoor gear. All students in grades 2-8 will go outside for break. According to our school handbook:
- All students go outside each school day for break time unless the weather does not cooperate. Students will need a written note from a physician to be excused from recess. Students are expected to dress for the season, including wearing boots, snow pants and coats during the winter months.
- We cancel outdoor recess when the outside temperature is 0° and/or the wind-chill factor is -10 °F, if the conditions are extremely icy or sloppy, or if it is raining and/or lightning.
- Lighthouse PTO Meeting: Our next PTO meeting is tomorrow, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. Join us at Lighthouse or virtually with this link.
Enjoy this last full week of October!

Next Possip Pulse Check: Coming Oct. 26
This year, we're sending monthly text messages and emails with a few simple questions asking for feedback on your experience with school. You will receive these messages from Possip, an organization we have partnered with to learn your needs. The next pulse check is tomorrow, Thursday, October 26. Make sure to reply to the brief survey and help keep us updated on your experience. Your responses remain confidential if you choose and you can choose to reply in your preferred language. Thank you!
Support during challenging times
As tragic and violent events in Israel and Gaza fill our our news and social media feeds, many in our community may be experiencing a variety of emotions and responses. In our schools, we have a full continuum of supports available to help students navigate challenges including those related to this international conflict.
In addition to support available at school, the National Association of School Psychologists has published a helpful resource for families and educators: Supporting Youth Affected by the Violence in Israel and Gaza. You may find this resource helpful for guiding age-appropriate conversations with your child about these current events.
As you talk with your children, please remind them there are many people at school ready to help them each day. Students are encouraged to talk with a teacher, counselor, social worker, principal or other school staff at any time. Parents and guardians are encouraged to be in contact with our main office for requests for support or questions.

Preparation for a career in healthcare
Senior Maria Mora-Pena has discovered a passion for medicine and wants to pursue a career in healthcare after she graduates high school next spring. To help her achieve this goal, she has gone deep into the Health and Human Services Pathway at Spring Lake Park High School, taking many courses that align with her emerging interests.
Through her courses, after-school activities and in working as an Emergency Medical Responder at school events, Maria is gaining real experience and developing the skills needed for her future.
We recently caught up with Maria to learn more about her experiences at Spring Lake Park High School and how they have prepared her for her future.
