JK Student Vote on Favorite Bluebonnet Book

Students all across the state who have read at least five of the 20 Bluebonnet nominated books by the end of January got to vote on which they felt should be selected as the winner. Jackson-Keller is proud to have 31 students in grades 3-5 who participated. Those students came in and had lunch in the library, decorated cookies, created duct tape bookmarks, voted on the iPads and enjoyed the prize drawings for free books, posters and other prizes. We found out that it really pays to read! The winner on our campus ended up being a three way tie between Emily's Blue Period, When the Beat was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop and Always, Abigail. We are excited to see what the rest of the State of Texas students vote on!

Author and illustrator Jason Chin will be on campus speaking to all grades

Thursday, Feb. 4th, 8:30am-2:30pm

1601 Jackson Keller Road

San Antonio, TX

We are so very excited to get the opportunity to visit with the very talented Jason Chin on Thursday, February 4th. Grades Kinder through 4th will get to hear how he researches for his non-fiction titles and where he gets his inspiration. Visit his website at: http://jasonchin.net/ for more information and a listing of all of his great titles. Those who preordered his books will get those signed by him on his arrival. We are so very excited to be hosting him.

Lively Library Lessons

We have been learning a lot in the library and having fun doing it too. Kinder began researching animals on Pebble Go! First and Second graders spent some time learning about fairy tales and folktales. Third through fifth graders enjoyed visiting National Landmarks via iPads in the library using the Nearpod website. Great fun and education. We felt virtually transported!

Library Happenings

Spring book fair

Get ready! Our Spring book fair is scheduled for Feb. 22nd-26th. Can't wait to see what new titles they'll have for us. And, we are always looking for volunteers who can help work the book fair. Contact Mrs. Darilek at 407-4428 or ldaril@neisd.net to get signed up to volunteer.

Poetry, anyone?

Wow! JK has been busy sharing our poems of the month with friends and family. Students have been consistently delivering their completed poetry pages in anticipation of their coveted "smelly" bookmark. We have loved even getting to hear a few of them deliver their oral recitation of the poem of the month. So proud of you all! For the months of November and December, we had almost 300 poems turned in. Great job, Jackrabbits! I wonder what kind of smelly bookmark January will bring.

PAWSitive Readers

JK would like to welcome Mrs. Bernie Barnes and her Golden Retriever, Gus to our JK campus. Gus is a certified therapy dog who gets to listen to some of our super JK readers. This dynamic duo comes weekly and are such a special treat. The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program works to improve children's reading and communication skills. Gus is planning to come visit classes in the library and sit down and read a book with them. Will he join your class?

Parent Accounts

Parents, did you know that you can check out up to ten books from our school library? Did you know that you can use that same ID number to check out digital books from our eBook collection? Come by the library and we will get you signed up with an account and show you how to check out from our extensive digital collection. You may also use this link to create your parent account.

Interested in volunteering?

Parents, we are always looking for parent volunteers to help us in the library on a weekly basis or for some of our special events. If you would like to help, please contact the librarian, Laurie Darilek and we will get you plugged in. We need you!
