Principal Message
Be a Sassafras
The sassafras tree is unique. The leaves of the sassafras tree consist of multiple different shapes, all on the same tree. It’s not unique to have variations of characteristics across species. However, it is more rare to have such variation of a feature on the same plant. While each leaf is slightly different, there are many similarities. This reminds me of the students at GRE. Everyone is truly unique and different, and that is a good thing. However, there can often be a fear of being different. Therefore, we also celebrate similarities. Our Start with hello > Find a connection > Create a friendship, also reinforces finding commonalities and connections among one another. This helps students feel included.
Our goal is that we can create a culture where students can be proud of themselves as an individual, while at the same time having connections and similarities with others.
Have a great long weekend,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D.

GRE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Board Mask Resolution
As you may have seen earlier this week, the Board of Education passed a resolution about masks at the PreK-8 beginning Tuesday, February 22nd. You can see the email and information below.
Regardless of how many students wear masks or do not on Tuesday, we will continue to support students and their choice. Furthermore, we will talk with the students about respecting differences. We have these conversations with students on an ongoing basis about how we are all different, but at the same time the same. We don’t anticipate this being an issue at GRE because of the strong value system we have in place.
***************
Dear Parents,
Students in grades PK-8 are no longer required to wear masks in school buildings during the instructional day beginning Tuesday, Feb. 22. Masks are of course permitted, but no longer required at the PK-8 level. Face masks will continue to be required on bus transportation, per federal executive order that extends through March 18, 2022.
The COVID-19 dashboard will continue to be updated daily with building case counts.
Per the Board’s resolution, no person shall be subject to discipline, harassment, or other mistreatment for choosing to voluntarily wear a mask or not wear a mask.
We understand masks are a difficult and divisive issue. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this pandemic. You can view the resolution the Board of Education passed at the Feb. 15 meeting at this link.
Thank you.

Due to unforeseen growth, Depp and Eversole are significantly over capacity. As a result, changes in attendance boundaries are needed, which will impact Glacier Ridge, Pinney, and Karrer.
Redistricting look-up:
We have a new link for the 2022-23 school year for parents to look up addresses to view the schools of attendance. This is updated on the website.
Meltdown Postponed Until Next Year
With ongoing changing guidelines and the significant time needed to plan an event, the school and PTO have collaboratively decided not to have the Meltdown carnival this year. Our Meltdown is an indoor carnival, typically held in early March. Planning begins in October with contracts and deposits. We held off as long as possible, but we made the difficult decision to not have the event. It was not possible to push the event to later in the year. We are disappointed, but are already planning different types of activities for the future.
