Week 17 for Families and Community Dec. 5-9, 2022
Dear Altadena Eliot Arts Families,
It was a wonderful week at school! Our Tournament of Roses, Royal Queen and her Court visited at our elementary school, we had our spring musical mandatory parent meeting with more than 100 families in attendance, our Altadena Town Council Education Committee hosted our Community Conversation about the future of our PreK-8 school, and a great school tour at the middle school. Then on Saturday, we hosted our holiday tree sale with our usual bake sale and gift drive for foster youth. Thanks to everyone who purchased a tree, volunteered and worked hard to make last week busy and productive!
Coming Up this Week:
Monday, Make up mandatory musical meeting for parents whose students are interested in auditioning for Peter Pan via Google Meet @ 4:30-5:30 meet.google.com/zpv-mytk-tuc
Wednesday, ELAC meeting @ 8:30 am in the Eliot Arts Library. This meeting is open to all parents with students in grades Pre K-8. See flyer below.
Thursday, Elementary school tour at 9:00 am in the Parent Room.
Friday, Shelter in Place Drill on both campuses at 9 am. There has been some recent concern around safety drills at our middle school campus. I want to assure parents that we have a fully developed school-wide safety plan that is outlined in our Altadena Eliot Staff Handbook. All staff members are prepped and trained on how to respond in a crisis and our main objective is to keep students safe and calm. We will discuss our safety plan in depth at our next PT(S)A meetings on January 10, but if you are curious, here is an example of one of many documents our staff has access to in their staff handbook under the heading of Safety. Code Yellow: Shelter in Place. Please see the screenshots below of our Drill Safety Memo and Safety Codes Placard that is posted in every classroom. Safety of our students and staff is my number one concern as your principal and I take it very seriously.
Saturday, December 10 Join us at Christmas Tree Lane Tree Lighting and 100 Year Anniversary Celebration where our Principal's Honor Choir will be singing at 5:00 pm. We will also have special craft and information tables for our beautiful elementary and middle school campuses! Stop by and support. It's going to be a great night!
Reminder to middle school parents. We still have a dress code, please do not send students to school in pajamas.

Welcome Mary Roper, RtI, Elementary!
Mary Roper and has been teaching since she was 9. "My father was a pastor of a small church, so I was the head of the weekly “children’s program.” I also went to a homeschool when I was 10 and was one of the oldest children of the 12 that attended. I helped teach the younger children and supervised them at lunch, I loved teaching. In college, I taught in an after school program called Science Adventures (which was at many schools in the San Gabriel Valley) and LEARNS at Willard Elementary. After I received my BA in Liberal Arts, I became a substitute teacher and loved the daily challenge of engaging and teaching students whom I just met. I was quickly hired by a supervising principal and began teaching in PUSD in 1997. During my time at PUSD, I have taught at Longfellow, Washington Accelerated, Jefferson, Webster, CIS, and Madison. I have learned how to work with various staff members, changing school climates, assisting principals with new and innovative ways to engage students and curb behavior issues that would arise. I love working with people and finding the strengths in every child. I have always loved the most challenging students and see the ways each child has grown in the time that I have spent with them. I am passionate about educating students, not only in academics, but also, life skills. It is my passion to encourage and give students and families hope for their future. I am super excited about working with everyone at Altadena!

From Middle School PTSA President, Michael McCarthy
Hello Husky Families,
Well, can you believe it, half a school year is almost gone? It has been a challenge and fun. Your PTSA has worked very hard, and will continue to do so for the betterment of Eliot Arts Magnet School. There will not be any PTSA Membership meetings until after the first of the year, but there will be messages in the S'mores.
PTSA is sponsoring an e-waste collection on Saturday, November 26th, so bring all of your e-waste to the Eliot parking lot.
Cleaning out your closet? Please set aside any gently used or new shoes for our upcoming fundraiser with cash4shooz! More details to follow in December.
Annual Fund!
Please consider making a recurring donation of $45 to one or both of our Annual Funds! Our annual funds help to create a bridge for special services and arts programs at each of our campuses. Our annual funds are separate. Altadena's annual fund is chaired by Ms. Tasiah LeConte and Eliot's annual fund is chaired by Ms. Wendy Silva. Please join their committees and consider making a donation today!
