We are continuing to work on Tricky Word Strategies. The children are learning various things they can do when they come to a word they don't know. Some of these are: saying the first sound in a word, sounding out the whole word, looking at the pictures, trying a word, and thinking about what would make sense.
We are currently working on week 22's sight words. This month our sight words are: an, they, all, this, with, or, his, and down. Your child will experience greater success when they are able to read these sight words. We call them "Popcorn Words" in the classroom because these are the words that pop up all the time when we read. If your child is struggling with reading these words you can put them on flash cards, do a shared reading with your child (they read the sight words and other words that are easy to sound out- you read all the others), allow them to make the word in the dirt with a stick, use cooked spaghetti noodles to make words, write it in sand, use legos to build them... anything that would spark their interest. If you need more ideas or would like to discuss your child's reading growth specifically, please let me know. I am always happy to talk with you about your child.

We are finishing up our unit on addition and subtraction. For the last month your child has visited a different teacher's classroom for the mini-lesson portion of our Math time. This will conclude this week as we enter into decomposing. All students will remain with their homeroom teachers for the entire Math time.
Following decomposing, we will begin a new unit in Math that focuses on 2D and 3D shapes.

Science
In January the children learned about the Natural Resources the earth provides for us. We identified them and discussed ways we can take care of these resources and conserve them.
This month we will learn how to classify and describe objects based on their properties. The properties we will discuss are shape, size, color, texture, flexibility, and weight.
