Miss Martinez's Math News
November 10- November 14
Greetings from Miss Martinez!
It was great to be able to meet with so many of you this week to talk about the growth and progress of your second graders! If you were unable to come in to meet this week, but would like to schedule a different time, please do not hesitate to call or email. A note about home practice. Due to a bit of confusion, home practice will always be on yellow paper. I hope this helps a bit with organization. And as always thank you for all of your support!
Learning Targets
I can compare and order numbers up to 1,000.
I can round to the nearest 10 and 100.
I can estimate sums and differences.
Rounding Numbers
We have been doing stations this week to work on various skills including rounding. This week to practice rounding we have looked at menus and tried to determine about how much money we need to take to the restaurant with us.
Comparing Numbers
Our math stations also offer a chance to practice comparing numbers. However, this week students first have to add or subtract two numbers and then compare them.
Estimating Sums & Differences
Our rounding has really prepared us for making ball park estimates. First we round the numbers we are adding and then we add. This helps us to check our work when working with bigger numbers.
Apps to Try
This past weekend I attended a math training with teachers from around the metro area. This training is focused on helping our students develop a strong number sense that will help them as they enter upper elementary and secondary math classes. Garfield's Mental Math was an app shared to help reinforce number sense with students K-2.
