Orange Team Times
Ms. Guardado and Ms. Simons' Classroom Update
Who We Are
Over the past 5 weeks, the Orange Team has been working through the planner Who We Are. We focused on creating respectful, responsible, and caring relationships with one another through books such as Each Kindness by Jaqueline Woodson. Another focus was on making choices and being aware of how those choices affect our relationships with others. By using There is a Bird on Your Head by Mo Willems students considered the choices Elephant could make to remove the birds and what the effects would be if he made those choices. Lastly, by reading The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson we discussed what diversity is, what it looks like, and investigated schools on 'the other side' of the world. Students worked together to find similarities and differences in pictures of classrooms from around the world.
Goings-On in the Classroom
Reading and Writing...
Students have been working on the Daily 5 structure, learning to read to self, read with someone, and work on writing. Reading skills that are being learned follow the Mnemonic device CAFE - Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary.
And Arithmetic
In Math, the Orange Team has been reviewing their past skills of addition and subtraction. Strategies such as counting on, counting back, making-a-ten, counting with doubles, and identifying evens and odd numbers are all the basic to building their second grade math skills. Students can look forward to
