Nuts and Bolts
- State Testing: Please check the schedule above for state testing this week. Tomorrow, we'll be finishing several students and then Tuesday four teachers start testing.
- Spending Priorities: Chromebooks was your highest priority followed closely by Lucy Calkins reading curriculum. Susan has already requested the 15 chromebooks. At the next Booster meeting, I'll ask the Booster's to spend their $2,000 technology budget to offset some of the chromebook purchase costs. I'm hopeful we'll have enough money to also purchase the reading curriculum. Don't print in color:)
- Jackson Bottom: This is Jackson Bottom week. In the calendar above, I used the times from our google calendar. They should be accurate. Check with Susan if you have any concerns.
- Talent Show: Our parent coordinator returns tomorrow and I'll send out a talent show update tomorrow afternoon.
- Classified Staffing: My classified staffing plan was approved on Friday. Tomorrow, I will inform each classified staff member of their hours for the 2016-17 school year.
Shout Outs
- Staff Luncheon: It's always a challenge when we change the lunch schedule. Thank you to Kathy and Reuter for their patience and understanding.
- During Daily 5 in Mallory's room, 95% of her students were on-task for the 10 minutes I observed. Just prior to leaving to lunch, Mallory told her students that they would have a sub after lunch. She asked them to identify ways they could support the sub. They had several helpful ideas. I'm sure her sub would have appreciated the front loading she did on her behalf.
- Daniel's class was engineering turbines. When she noticed several were struggling, she stopped the class to go over the instructions again. Once the light bulbs went off, she let them go at it again. I heard one student say: "This is what engineers have to do to."
- While observing Christina's class, I noticed how all of the vocabulary included a picture. This is an excellent SIOP strategy.
- Robin's students were finishing a Story Champs writing assignment. All 31 students were on task. Robin told her students "Think of all of the resources you have in the room, like the board, each other, and me." I then heard a student ask another student "Can you check my writing for spelling errors?" This student is now a teacher!
- Last Monday we had someone from Playworks observing (reporting) how our implementation has gone so far. I received the report on Thursday and we scored very well and they provided some excellent feedback for us to consider. I would like to thank all of our duty staff and especially Shay for leading the effort to revamp our recess activities so students have more choices.
