STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
COVID19 Cannot Stop Lady Justice
The sixth grade GT students have been learning about law over the past couple months, culminating last week when they competed in mock trials. Students began by learning about different types of courts and cases within the court systems of the United States and New Jersey. They then learned how to write an opening statement and a closing argument, how to conduct a direct examination and a cross examination, and, finally, how and when to object during a trial.
Then during each of the sixteen mock trials, the attorneys on each side of the case presented their arguments in an attempt to persuade the jury to find in their favor. Jurors were chosen from the 6th grade classes who were watching the trial, and they ultimately decided the outcome of the case. Even though the trials had to be completely virtual this year, the student attorneys and jurors all did an amazing job. Great work, everyone!
Earth Day Activity
Last week my (Miss Fessman's) classes celebrated Earth Day by hand painting our own terracotta pots that we will use to plant sunflowers and peas. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be measuring the germination period and tracking the growth of the plants. Our independent variable is the type of soil used, as we will be experimenting with two different brands. We will then graph our results and relate it to our upcoming math topic: Unit Rate. Stay tuned for updates!
So Far from the Bamboo Grove Final Assessment
Ms. McLaughlin's class read the novel, So Far from the Bamboo Grove, an autobiographical memoir about a Japanese girl and her family trying to get to the safety of their homeland at the end of WWII. At the conclusion of the novel, they were given choices for their final assessment. Some students chose to prepare Asian foods and video themselves doing so, others wrote a literary analysis of theme, some conducted research on North Korea and its economic growth since WWII, and some created anime. The students did an excellent job as always!
National Junior Honor Society
National Junior Honor Society advisors will be notifying students of eligibility into NJHS following 3rd marking period grades. Students must have a 92 average with 75% coming from academics and 25% coming from specials. The community volunteering hour requirement will be waived due to the pandemic. Students cannot have a discipline record this year in order to qualify.
