The Shrinking Aral Sea

Location and Climate

The Aral Sea is located in arid plains, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The Aral Sea started to dry up because of irrigation, which helped the desert, but harmed the sea. Dust storms came more often, winter's got colder, and summer's got hotter and drier.
Aral Sea Time Lapse: 2000-2011

The Aral Sea is a saltwater lake located in Russia. Due to human environment interaction, the lake has shrunk more than 60% since the early 1970's. Kazakhstan has attempted to save the Aral Sea with a dam, which may cause the lower part to disappear.
