FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM (STUBBS EARLY EDUCATION CENTER)
FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM SHINING STAR
Octavia has been a dependable student and has attended classes most days and during each class, she works very hard. Last school year, Octavia and her son Josiah attended every Parent Night Activity, took part in the after-school program, and were always ready for a home visit. In addition, Octavia is a member of the Parent Advisory Council at Stubbs Early Education Center and works for the school district as a bus aid. When schools were closed last spring, Octavia and Josiah were the first to complete work from the weekly take home packets. During this time, she also attended class zoom meetings and always guessed the Word of the Day. Octavia has worked so hard that we returned to class this fall, her test scores increased by 30 points in both reading and math! We are very glad to have her in our class and looking forward to her continuing to SHINE!

NEW CASTLE COUNTY LEARNING CENTER STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
She is a determined, focused learner…
A self-motivated, conscientious student …
An inspiration for her fellow students …
These words all describe Jane, a practicing nurse whose goal was to earn her GED and apply to the Registered Nursing program at Delaware Technical College.
What steps has she taken to pursue this goal? She started at NCCLC in January 2020. Since the start of the pandemic, she has completed all four of her tests in one month: Science on July 1; Social Studies on July 8; RLA on July 17, and Math on July 30.
What is truly remarkable about this accomplishment is that she took the first three tests at her home as online-proctored tests. Moreover, for the Math test, she traveled to Dover. Jane studied for all of these tests while quarantining and ill with the Covid-19 virus. Jane put in dozens of hours at home on GED Academy and attended every ZOOM lesson we conducted stating from late March. In fact, several mornings after having worked all night, she joined our 9:00 am lessons and not only participated, but also encouraged other students to keep logging on, reading, and attending all our lessons.
Even more noteworthy, her naturally nurturing personality prompted her to share healthy strategies with her classmates and teachers in regards to dealing with pandemic anxiety. Jane is a young woman whom we are all proud to know and we can be assure that her performance in her nursing career will be a reflection of her zest for learning.
