Our school online Book Fair is going on if you would like to add anything to your home libraries. In Reading: Our essential question is: What character traits were needed in people who settled in the West? We will determine the meaning and use grade level words with the prefix Trans- and suffix -ous, -ious. We will be learning to analyze literary elements to increase comprehension of a text. In Writing: We are continuing the process of writing a formal letter. We ask that all students have a book to read with them in their backpacks daily, so that if they finish things early it is something they can do, as well as we have silent reading time in class. They can check out books from our school library by using Destiny and going to https://destiny.dvusd.org/ from the DVUSD start page. Students should be working on the Amplify https://reading.amplify.com/ reading website 30-40 minutes a week. Homework is anything that needs to be finished from class and reading your independent library book.

Math
WHOOO HOO! We survived module 2! I am so impressed with how hard everyone worked to understanding multi-digit multiplication and division. Just a reminder- if your child would like to retake any quizzes so far they will get an extra attempt in Canvas! We are starting module three, which will go over addition and subtraction of fractions. This is one of my favorite modules and I am so excited to begin. As always, please reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns

Science
In science our essential question for the week will be "How do substances combine or change (react) to make new substances?". This week students will watch videos reactions and try to determine if what they observed was a physical or chemical reaction. Then students will learn how to distinguish between physical and chemical reactions. Students will then get to complete their final Mystery Science "Why do some things explode?". In this Mystery, students investigate and model how gases cause explosions. In the activity, Bag of Bubbles, students experiment by combining baking soda and vinegar inside a sealed bag and observe how the gas bubbles produced cause the bag to inflateāand sometimes pop!

Social Studies
In Social Studies this week we are finishing up our unit on the Constitution. Students will learn about the Bill of Rights and the preamble. They will also be learning how to be an active member of a community and what civic responsibilities are like paying taxes, voting, and being a member of a jury.
