Holiday Gift of Giving
During this holiday season the staff and students of Gayman Elementary plan to share the spirit of warmth and love with families from our local area. By sharing this project with the community we will be able to provide gifts for many of the children. You can help by taking a tag from the giving tree in the lobby. Simply purchase a gift, wrap it, attach the tag to the gift, and place it under the tree by Wednesday, December 14th. In lieu of donating food and household items, we are again asking each homeroom to collect money to be used towards the purchase of grocery store gift cards.
This year we are also supporting the Bucks County Homeless Children's Initiative. If you choose to take a mustang tag for the Bucks County Homeless Children's Initiative, simply purchase a gift certificate to K-Mart, Target or a local grocery store and return the certificate to school with the tag attached.
During this season of celebration and generosity, it is such a valuable lesson for our children to learn the importance of helping others who are less fortunate. For complete details please click here.
Tis' The Season
Tis’ the season for giving and Gayman’s students got into the spirit on Friday! As a hands-on learning experience to go along with our Pajama Day for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, many classrooms worked together to assemble craft activity kits for the patients who are spending time at CHOP over the holidays. We were able to create almost 200 individual activity kits that will be sure to bring some fun and happiness to the hospitalized youngsters during the month of December.
Secret Shop Shout Out
The Secret Shop committee would like to thank all of the parent volunteers for helping to make this year's Secret Shop another memorable and fun experience for the kids. The students entered the room with eyes as big as saucers and eager to start shopping for their family and friends. It was touching to see how much thought they put into each gift.
The committee would also like to thank everyone who entered their contest, "How many marshmallows are in the teddy bear's giant hot cocoa mug?". With an exact, heart-warming guess of 778, congratulations to Jake Van Aken in Mr. Lechniak's 6th grade class. Jake is the proud recipient of a 4 foot stuffed teddy bear and Mr. Lechniak was presented with a S'mores Hot Cocoa Mug Set. In second place, with a very close, heart-warming guess was Isabella Sailor from Mrs. Snyder's 2nd grade class. She too went home with a (smaller) stuffed teddy bear.
2017 Science Fair
Gayman Elementary will be holding its 2017 Science Fair on February 23, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. This year’s theme is Hands-On Science. We are anxious to see what projects our students will create this year. Please encourage your child(ren) to participate in this year’s fair. There is no judgement or contest, only participation, creativity, and fun! Students may work alone or in groups. Groups may be classmates, siblings, or friends, and it’s great to work with children from other grade levels, too.
If you are interested in participating, please click here to read through the information packet. The last 2 pages include the Contract and Special Considerations form. Please print, sign, and return both of these to your child’s teacher by Friday, January 6. Each child participating needs a contract signed by a parent. If you prefer a hard copy of the packet, please ask your child’s teacher to send one home.
Look for more information in future Gayman Gazettes as well as on the Science Fair page of the Gayman website. Reminders will also come home through the Thursday folder. If you have any questions, please ask.
We are looking forward to an exciting evening!

Warning Sounded on Technology Disrupting Student Sleep Patterns
A meta-analysis by British researchers that examined student sleep habits and mobile device use raised serious concerns about the impact of “blue light” on student sleep.
Among the researchers’ findings:
Children who used portable media devices at bedtime were about twice as likely to not sleep enough, compared with children who did not have access to a device.
Children who used a portable media device at bedtime were more than 40 percent more likely to report poor sleep quality than children who did not have access to a device.
There were also significantly increased odds of inadequate sleep quantity and poor sleep quality for children who had access to a media device near bedtime, even if they did not use it.
Children who had access to or used a portable media device at bedtime were more than twice as likely to demonstrate excessive daytime sleepiness than children without access to a device.

Boomerang Award
This year, Gayman will continue to accept nominations for the Boomerang Award, which is our way of honoring students who best demonstrate their own developmental assets. What are Developmental Assets? Students possessing a combination of “40 Assets” are typically most successful in school and in life. These assets have the power to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. For a complete listing of the 40 Developmental Assets visit: www. Search-institute.org.
December #24. Bonding To School. Young person cares about his/her school. The student is actively engaged in promoting a positive school community. Boomerang nominations may be emailed to Suzanne Vass at svass@cbsd.org, or printed out and sent into the office.
