Congratulations Lakan Duskin! Petaluma filmmaker’s “Great White Lego Movie” to be shown at SF’s Sharktoberfest

Link to article in Argus Courier

When Petaluma 7th-grader Lakan Duskin was in 4th grade at Mary Collins/Cherry Valley School, he used a large set of Legos to create a delightfully fact-filled, animated documentary titled “Great White Sharks!“

The film begins with the attention-grabbing statement, ”Off the coast of the Farallon Islands roams an apex predator 21-feet in length eating everything it can sink its teeth into. This is the Great White Shark!” Duskin, who narrates the film himself, uses clever stop-motion animation to depict sharks swimming, giving birth, eating seals, and being hunted by ”finners“ who catch the sharks only to cut their fins off for soup.

“It's so timeless and educational, it has shown at the International Ocean Film Festival and will show at the upcoming Sharktoberfest Movie Night,” explains Petaluma resident Jennifer Stock, the education and outreach coordinator for the Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries.

The movie night takes place Saturday, Sept. 24 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Crissy Park in San Francisco. Specifically, the event is at the Greater Farallones Visitor Center Outdoor Campus, 991 Marine Drive, in the Presidio, where an afternoon of shark-tastic activities is planned before the 7:30 p.m. screening of films, including Duskin’s three-minute charmer, succinctly listed in the program as “Great White Lego Movie.”

Middle School Food Drive - Petaluma Market

Saturday, September 17 - TOMORROW!

Petaluma Market

10:00am - 4:00pm

Please come by and support the students’ efforts.

Middle school students at Mary Collins School at Cherry Valley have again taken on the challenge this year. Community support has always been an important aspect at MCCV but has taken on more importance in the middle school this year. Students are participating in food drives for Food for Thought. Food For Thought is an organization that provides healthy food and groceries to Sonoma County residents with serious or long-term medical conditions.

On the 3rd Saturday of each month, students are in front of Petaluma Market, encouraging customers to buy a few extra things for Food for Thought’s food bank. Of course, cash is also accepted. There are two student volunteers for each hour, working shifts from 10:00am-4:00pm.

September Garden News

This week Sarah and the students focused their attention on the heat wave and water conservation. Sarah taught about what plants need water, the best times to water, and when to harvest.

Ms. Ribiero's class helped harvest the pumpkin bed & bean stalks because we need to be wise with water usage in this heat wave and during drought. We only water what needs to still grow. During high heat hours, Sarah took garden into the classroom with worm anatomy and Nature Journaling lavender and plant parts. Grades 2-5 visited our worm bin and sifted out compost debris from the gorgeous, fertile worm castings which we will add into our garden beds! Thank you worms!

Sarah noticed ladybugs eating the willow aphids and beautiful plump caterpillars in the herb garden. At sunrise I found little California Gnatcatcher birds eating their share of willow aphids too. These birds mean that we have a healthy ecosystem in our school garden thanks to all the hands that care for the garden with love and compassion. As the seasons change so do the garden beds. We are harvesting, turning soil, and starting our fall and winter garden. Thank you for reading the newsletter and learning about lessons with Sarah in the garden.

In Gratitude,

Heather Gallagher- Garden Coordinator

Sarah Koniak- Garden Teacher
