Readers' Workshop
- We are learning that Readers' Workshop is a time when readers listen and read texts, think about their reading, make connections, and practice foundational reading skills (decoding unfamiliar words, word work with spelling patterns like CVC- bat, mop, tub).
- We are learning good reading strategies to use when reading tricky words such as getting your mouth ready, sliding through the word, looking for smaller parts within the word, and looking at the pictures.
- We are learning to become independent readers by building our reading stamina.
At home you can:
- Read to and with your child daily.
- Encourage your child to practice their decoding and reading strategies.
- Ask your child questions about the text such as identifying the character, setting, and problem/solution. You can ask them to tell what happened in the text.
- Practice making CVC words (ex: bat, red, bop).

Writers' Workshop
We are learning that Writers' Workshop is a time when we are writing, conferencing with a teacher, sharing writing, and understanding the structure of a complete sentence. As writers, we get ideas from other writers.
We have focused on telling oral narratives or small moments. We enjoyed sharing our stories and creating a class story together. We will be focusing on writing Descriptive essays describing our wonderful world. Descriptive essays encourage us to use our senses to tell about our world. We will learn how adjectives describe nouns and help to create images in our minds.
At home you can:
- Encourage your child to share a small moment verbally or written.
- Encourage your child to practice writing sentences that include a noun or verb. (Ex. John likes to climb trees.)
Math Workshop
Topic 1: Addition and Subtraction within 10
- We are using a variety of tools to decompose and compose numbers.
- We are working on building our conceptual knowledge of addition and subtraction by visualizing, writing number sentences, and making meaning through real world situations (word problems).
At home you can:
- Practice identifying and writing numerals 1-20.
- Practice counting from 1 to 20 forward and backward starting at any number.
- Practice showing different ways to represent a number (counters- can be any item that can be counted, number sentence)
- Tell a word problem that involves addition or subtraction and ask your child to show their thinking in solving the problem. (Ex: There were 4 cookies. I got 3 more. How many cookies do I have now?)
Questions to ask:
- What parts do you see? What part is red? What part is yellow?
- What number is the ten frame representing?
- Can you write an addition sentence to match the ten frame?
Questions to ask:
- What number is represented on the rekenrek?
- What number sentence can you write to match the rekenrek?
Questions to ask:
- What do you notice?
- What do you wonder?
- How do you see 7 in this image?

Woodland CARES
Woodland CARES is followed throughout our school. Cooperation means we work together to achieve a goal. Act Responsibly means we are accountable for our choices and actions. Respect All means we treat others the way we want to be treated. Exhibit Effort means we continue to work through a challenge to achieve success. Show Self-Control means we are aware of our bodies and can identify what Zone of Regulation we are in. Whole body listening is part of our self-control.
