Brooke Mace, office assistant
Brooke Mace has fun doing many different activities. Every afternoon, she serves as an office assistant to Parke Heritage Middle School secretary, Rena Uplinger. In her third year of helping in the office, eighth grader Brooke helps pass out bus notes, runs errands as well as other tasks that Rena needs assistance with.
“It’s really fun to help Rena,” said Brooke. “I don’t like to do my homework at school, so it is a fun way to use my Pack Time.”
When Brooke was in sixth grade, Mr. Shane Vandivier asked her to help him with some projects in the office. She then became drafted by Rena to help her run errands and she has been doing it ever since.
“Brooke Mace is a hard worker!” said Mrs. Kylie Gates, social studies teacher. “Brooke’s work in the office shows incredible responsibility and maturity. She always greets you with a smile and a positive attitude. Overall, she is a well rounded person and a joy to be around! I would gladly have Brooke every year!”
In addition to being an office assistant, Brooke is a member of the cross country team. She runs two to three miles a day to prepare for the competitions. Her goal is to beat the boys who are on the team. In 2019, she won the girls division of the Banks of the Wabash River Conference cross country race. Recently, she placed fourth in the First Financial Invitational held in Terre Haute, which is the highest placing a PH runner has earned.
She enjoys running cross country because the team runs in different places such as the park trails and the campground.
“When running, it’s important to keep your eye on the prize,” said Brooke. “I love running, it calls my name!”
She also runs track in the spring competing in the 1600m, the 800m and the 4x400m relay. For her, track is a good conditioning sport for cross country.
In addition to her school work, Brooke and her sister, Lilie, also own and show goats in 4-H. She has Pygmy, Mytonic and Boer goats that she feeds in the morning before coming to school.
“The goats are just fun,” said Brooke. “They are the highlight of my day. They teach you patience.”
