PE with Coach Freeman:
We will be starting a unit on soccer! We will then finish the month with games that build teamwork, unity, and cooperation.
Art with Mrs. Lovelace:
We will be creating several Spring projects to celebrate our new season in Art. The students will continue to learn and apply new techniques using different art mediums. We will continue to incorporate the elements of art in our projects.
Music with Mrs. Hinton:
This month in music we will be listening to composer Antonio Vivaldi: The Four Seasons. We will explore sounds and instrument timbres that reflect the seasons as well as use scarves and play music games to express and reinforce the concepts learned.
Library with Mrs. Churchill & Mrs. Cunningham:
This month in the library, we will continue to review the parts of the book (front cover, back cover and title page) and the parts of a story (characters, setting, and plot.) The plot is the series of events that happen in the story and usually centers around a problem and how the characters solve that problem. Discussing a story after you read it helps to increase comprehension and enjoyment of reading!
Health Spot
Please follow the "need to stay home" guidelines as well as teaching them proper hand hygiene (wash for 20 seconds) and covering their mouth or nose when they sneeze or cough (please teach them to cough, sneeze on the inside of their shirt collar by lifting it up to their nose/mouth). Flu season is upon us and these are good habits to start with your children now.
Reminders from Nurse Kenzig...
Please send all students at least 2 changes of clothes in their backpacks. Even if your child has not had any accidents, they may need a change of clothes due to spills, illness, or outside activities.
Please ensure that your contact information in current in Skyward and you have provided emergency contacts as well.
We have completed much of our vision and hearing screenings, please follow up with either your family physician (hearing) or an Optometrist (vision) if you received a referral form in your child's folder (sent home prior to our winter break) for a more thorough evaluation. Once the referral has been completed, please return them to the clinic so your student's records can be updated.
Please check your students daily for lice or nits.
Lastly, please verify that your child has received any follow up vaccines necessary to remain in school. Although we make every attempt to send reminders home in your student's folders or via email, it is still the parent's responsibility to keep their child up to date in accordance with Texas State Law.
Counselor's Corner
For the month of March we will be learning about our amazing brains. The brain guides everything that we do: our body’s movements, our decision making, and our emotions. Teaching students about the brain will help them learn how to control their brain, and by extension, their feelings and actions. Rather than feeling overwhelmed with a big emotion, a child can identify the part of the brain that is reacting and can use strategies to regulate the emotion. Below are the areas of the brain that we will be teaching.
1. The amygdala teaches us that sometimes our brain is flooded with emotion. Good news! It’s not our fault when we feel overwhelmed – it’s our amygdala taking over. Even better news! We can control that. We can teach kids strategies to overcome these amygdala hijacks.
2. The prefrontal cortex teaches us that we need to help our brain help us make good decisions, think clearly, and control our impulses. It is so powerful for kids to understand that their brain controls all of their actions, and that there are things they can do to stretch and grow their brain, and to regulate their emotions. 3. The hippocampus teaches us that we need to strengthen and stretch our brains all the time so that we can remember everything we learn at school. Remembering is important! If you can’t retain what you learned in second grade, third grade is going to be pretty tricky. Kids need the reminder that they have to use their brain in order to learn.
