Common Based Assessments
Exciting times are here at Hackberry with Common Based Assessments. Next week you see the ease of building an assessment with Schoolcity, I know you will be confident in your abilities to design and score a CBA. I am positive that the ability to assess your students, discuss the results with peers, and design lessons directly based on your students’ data that will significantly impact our students’ achievement. For years we have heard and discussed the need for common assessments, and now that need has become a reality. I can see that this will be a year of incredible academic gain for our students and unequaled job satisfaction for our teams.

Classroom Strategy of the Week
Establish classroom rules immediately and enforce them consistently.
Most of our teachers do a great job establishing expectations and rules for their class, but where the problem comes into play is being consistent. It's great to have CHAMPS on the wall, but if you never refer to them they they are simply great wall art. The power in CHAMPS is your ability to utilize them every time you transition or moving from one activity to the next. When students are clear about expectations, they spend less time off task and more time learning. When Establishing rules the first week of school, you must always follow through on the specified rewards for achievement and consequences for misbehavior. If you allow a student to get away with misbehavior without consequence even once, you’ve opened the door to future misbehavior and negotiation of rules. This is no different when rewarding good behavior or successes with students. This is particularly important at the beginning of the year, when you’re building your students’ trust in you as their teacher.
When Jill and I are in classrooms we will continue to look for CHAMPS to be utilized at every transition. If you are struggling with CHAMPS, please get with Jill or myself and we will ensure you are fully equipped to have all the skills necessary.
