Liberty's Smore Newsletter
A reminder that in June and July we move to only one newsletter per month at the first of the month. If you are new to my newsletters the purpose is simple: To keep families in the loop about upcoming Liberty events and the cool stuff Liberty kids and staff do.
Thank you for a wonderful 2018-19 school year. Year 2 is in the books and I am proud of the positive changes that have occurred at Liberty through both a culture/climate lens and an increased attention to academic detail lens. We just had our graduation ceremony for the class of 2019. They have made a huge difference at Liberty. I will miss the many outstanding students that I got to know over the past 2 years.
I look forward to the 2019-20 school year. Though, it will be year 3 with students at Liberty it will be the first with 4 full classes of students. The class of 2020 has always had a special place in my heart. Several of the 2020 students were with me in my planning year on my student advisory. Many of them participated in the first Liberty teams that happened to be freshman teams sporting Liberty colors while attending West High. I have high expectations for the Leadership and Responsibility the 2020 Senior Class will have on our school and their legacy at Liberty.
Thank you
Scott

Athletic Training Room News
Don't forget to schedule your summer sports physicals. Valid physicals are due by the first day of fall practices (for fall sports) and clinic spots fill up fast.
You can turn updated physicals into the athletic office at any time!
Reading Strategies and Career Exploration
During the third trimester, Mrs. Dolson’s Reading Strategies students completed some career exploration activities. Students researched vocations through the Occupational Outlook Handbook, completed a monthly budget exercise, and completed a multiple intelligence survey.
Students then visited Kirkwood’s campus at Oakdale to listen to a presentation about academy courses and post-high school opportunities and to tour the STEM facilities. After the Kirkwood visit, students attended a session at United Action for Youth where they could explore the arts by participating in drawing, video games, and music production. To complement these activities, students listened to Career Exploration speakers. Four members from the community spoke about the pathway to their career and answered questions from the students.
Panelists included Doctor of Nursing Practice Margaret Boyt, representing health care fields; Iowa National Guard Specialist Zach Harmes, representing military careers; Home Ec owner Codi Josephson, representing small business ownership; and UAY counselor Kylie Buddin, representing IT and music. Mr. Rick Spear, Career Facilitator at Liberty, helped with the field trip and organized the panel discussion.

The Liberty Fund
The first 83 bricks have been engraved. We intend on engraving twice a year, so the next engraving will be in the fall (September/October).
Bricks can be purchased using the link below. They can celebrate a graduation, participation in our numerous clubs, ensembles and teams. Bricks can advertise a business commitment to Liberty. We also have bricks in memorial as well.
www.iowacityschools.org/TheLibertyFund
Money from the bricks supports the Liberty Fund. The Liberty Fund's mission is to serve underfunded groups/activities as well as provide access for students who may not have the means to participate in our programs. The Liberty Fund hopes to support students having a broad rich learning experience and Champion Liberty Pride.
To date the Liberty fund has supported such groups as: Business Professionals of America, In Shoc, MLK Day, Storm Show Choir, Garden Club, The Math Team and the Art Club.

Liberty's facility receives regional recognition
We recently learned that Liberty High School took 1st place in the ASHRAE Region 6 Technology Awards for New Educational Buildings. Since the region includes Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois & Missouri, the project had competition from significant projects in a number of large metro areas.
About ASHRAE
ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s build environment today.
Congratulations to the Liberty design and construction teams on the ASHRAE recognition. It’s nice to see ICCSD get some well-deserved recognition for some of the innovative systems you have been putting in and we appreciate you letting us be part of these projects!

World Language-Chinese
Interested in taking Chinese at Liberty?
The Confucius Institute will continue offering Chinese coursework at Liberty High School to current Liberty High students.
In Fall 2019, we will offer CHIN:1115 Beginning Chinese I. This course is designed for students who are not native Chinese speakers but want to learn the basics of the language. More specific course details can be found here.
This coursework is open to all juniors and seniors, as well as freshman and sophomores who are ELP identified. This is a University of Iowa PSEO class, which means that it is free of charge to eligible students. In order to be eligible, students must apply and be accepted to the University of Iowa (which requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50). This coursework begins the student’s University of Iowa official transcript and will count in the student’s college cumulative GPA. This coursework will also be included on the student’s Liberty High transcript, but will not count toward a student’s high school cumulative GPA.
Beginning Chinese I will be offered at Liberty High before school (7:30 - 8:45am) on Tuesday/Thursday (days are subject to change). Therefore, transportation is the student’s responsibility.
Interested students are required to speak with Mr. Bergmann no later than Wednesday, May 22nd. Mr. Bergmann will provide specific timeline and application details. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Bergmann at bergmann.troy@iowacityschools.org or at 319-688-1354.
