Scheduled Classes 4K-2nd Grade 8:00am-10:45am Daily (Fixed Schedule)
Scheduled weekly visits include a read aloud and an accompanying lesson related to the
7 Habits of Highly Effective People or a lesson supporting classroom curriculum and/or the ELA standards followed by book checkout and Makerspace time permitting.
During the third nine weeks, I continued reading the SC Picture Book Award Nominees to the related arts classes. We had a weekly Battle of the Books competition in the Learning Commons to see which Picture Book Nominee would make it to the top. Each week after the read aloud, students voted on their favorite book. Students were excited to see the previous week's winner when visiting the Learning Commons. Bobbie the Wonder Dog: A True Story was the winning picture book for FPES.
To celebrate Read Across America Week, I read If I Ran A Circus by Dr. Seuss. Since many circuses are now removing animal performances, students were challenged to create a new circus act that did not involve animals. Students had a great time planning, creating and sharing their creative circus act.
Class Visits 3rd-5th Grades (Flexible Schedule)
- Third thru fifth grade students visit the Learning Commons throughout the day independently for book checkout.
- Fifth grade classes had their third and fourth lessons in a series of five Digital Citizenship lessons. The third lesson focused on distinguishing private information from personal information on the internet and creating strong passwords. During the fourth lesson, students formed their teams and began working on their instructional videos. Topics of choice were-Cyberbullying, Finding Good Sites or Being Safe-Private vs Personal Information.
- Fifth grade classes also had a great time working on my World War II scavenger hunt.
- I will continue the Digital Citizen lessons with third and fourth grade during the fourth nine weeks.
Goals
I will create a Digital Citizen unit of study for the fifth grade students that meets the Computer Science Standards and prepares students for safe and responsible behavior on the internet. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of digital citizenship and mastery of four digital literacy computer science standards in the areas of safety, being respectful and being responsible through creative instructional videos.
*The third and fourth digital literacy lessons were taught during the third nine weeks. Students in the fifth grade distinguished the difference between personal and private information. They also practiced creating strong passwords. Students are excited about creating their instructional videos during the 4th nine weeks.
Professional
I will promote literacy in our school with reading programs each nine weeks and incentives throughout the year.
*During the month of February, we celebrated Love That Book. Students wrote their favorite book and why they loved it on a heart. If their heart was drawn from the basket, their book review was announced on the morning news show and they received a free book. It was a little slow at first, but once students started to see the book reviews on the news show and realized they received a free book if their heart was chosen, it really picked up!

- Love That Book-Students wrote their favorite book and why they loved it on a heart. If their heart was drawn from the basket, their book review was announced on the morning news show and they received a free book. Their heart was then displayed on the bulletin board in the Learning Commons. It was a little slow at first, but once students started to see the book reviews on the news show and realized they received a free book if their heart was chosen, it really picked up!
- Read Across America-To celebrate Read Across America, we had dress up days for students and teachers and we announced daily Dr. Seuss trivia questions on the morning news show. Three winners with the correct answers were randomly chosen from the box daily. These students received an assortment of Dr. Seuss prizes. We also asked several staff members to record themselves reading a Dr. Seuss book. We loved how they chose to do this in their home by the fireplace with their cat by their side or on the couch with a grandchild. The videos were shared with teachers to show their class. Students really enjoyed hearing and watching staff members such as our head custodian, Kevin Bolin, the food service manager, Janet Callahan and secretary, Linda Wehrmann, read from their home.
- Spring Book Fair-The Spring Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success! We had our largest sale yet! Total sales were $8015.59. This gave us a profit of $1485.65 in cash and $774.31 worth of books pulled from the book fair for the Learning Commons.
Successes
- Spring Book Fair was our biggest yet! We would like to thank everyone who made it such a huge success!
- We had great student participation for Love That Book during the month of February. I am looking forward to offering more student sharing opportunities.
- We are slowly raising our average copyright age of the library collection through weeding. We will continue to weed throughout the 4th nine weeks.
- On my Learning Walks to PES and PMS, I was able to borrow ideas from these schools in creating an environment that is inviting and functional.
- I attended some very informative sessions during the SCASL Annual Conference in Columbia. I became inspired by the keynote speaker, Shannon Miller, to find creative ways to reach out to my readers.
- My Can't Resist This Book displays have been successful with increasing circulation among titles. The display captions really catch the student's eye and spark interest in the books on display.
