2017/2018 SVB
From the Directors
Please make sure you schedule some time between trips to the beach or ball field to go through this year’s band information.
- SVBand Google Classroom-This is the format we will be using to share music, assignments, reminders, ect. regarding SV Band. All band members have already been invited to the classroom via their sylvaniastudents.org email.
- www.southviewband.com is in its final stages of update and will go live very soon! Many thanks to Don Miller and company with their help rolling out the updated website.
- The band handbook has been reviewed, revised, and will posted in the SV Band Google Classroom and website. Being a member of SVB comes with expectations. Both the musician and their parent need to know what is expected. It's important that you read this entire packet. Important elements of the handbook include: the attendance policy, the absence form, new instrument loan agreement/fee, student leadership outline, and grading for the school year.
- Marching Music Packets~all students will need to print their music from google classroom and put into their flip folders prior to the first rehearsal.
- Finally, the Boosters will be holding an informational meeting from 7-8pm on July 22 with an Ice Cream Social to follow rehearsal. This meeting will be in the theater. The boosters will be providing information for all parents regarding fundraising, concessions, working Contest in March, and more! Parents, plan to attend.

Marching Music Suggetsions
- Drumline: you need to have a 3-ring binder for your music.
- Sousaphones: you just need a flip folder
- Music size: Marching band music is small so it can fit into the flip folders. If you're quick to memorize or would like larger print music for indoor rehearsal, just adjust your print size of each piece to make it larger. We suggest keeping these items in a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors.

What are Uniform Fittings?
Uniform fittings are completed in two stages~ at camp and after camp. While at camp, each member of the band will meet with Mrs. Miller to order shoes, gloves, and the official SVB T-Shirt. Following camp, each band member needs to come in during a fitting time to get fitted for their marching uniform and to pay their Uniform & Sylvania Schools Pay to Participate Fees. The dates for this can be found on the band calendar. Please try to adhere to the schedule of grade levels. This portion of Uniform fittings takes about 20 minutes once you get started.
If you have questions about uniforms please contact Janeen Miller. If you have questions about Uniform Fees & Sylvania Schools Pay to Participate, please contact Carmi Gulick.
Parent Volunteering- It Takes a Village
There are different types of parents in the band program. There are the people who come in and ‘just do it.’ They do whatever needs to be done. You see them all the time, working, laughing, and celebrating the experience. There are the people who hold back a bit but will help if asked. They wait for someone to give them a task. Don’t wait. Volunteer for something you think you would like. Trust us, we need you!
Not every parent can give large blocks of time to the program. We completely understand. Some are worried that they do not have the right skills. We have many tasks that require little or no skill -- just a pulse and a willingness to help. New parents worry that they will be harassed and sucked into something they don’t want to do. We respect your boundaries and your time; we all have commitments and know what a challenge it can be to balance everything. Give what you can, when you can, and we will all be better for it.
There is work that has to be done, lots of work and funds that need to be raised, lots of funds; two separate but mutually important endeavors. Whatever you can do will be appreciated without question, especially by those parents who are trying to cover all the bases.
We are trying to streamline our volunteer coordination and would prefer that adult volunteers use Sing-Up Genius online. You'll be sent an email with links and additional information is sent through the Band Boosters & this newsletter. You can also contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Renee Long. Newsletters are full of vital information and are kept brief and only sent a few times a year.
Even for the parents, the SVB Marching Band is not meant to be a spectator sport. Your child is going to be on their own in a couple of years. This may be your last chance to share something very special with your son or daughter. You will be close enough to enjoy their experience, and far enough away to give them their space. You will meet wonderful people -- directors, staff members, parents, and students. These are the best of times and we want you to come in and enjoy them with us. The band programs need you to help SVB continue to be their best.
please complete the form below, it should only take 2 minutes
