I won't lie. This list is not easy, but students can practice this list by visiting Spelling City (Grade 2 Unit 2 Week 5).
It is also worth noting that the weekly dictation sentences that are at the bottom of the weekly spelling tests will now be entered into the grade book as a language arts grade. This activity addresses many of the conventions of standard English that are expected of 2nd grade students: grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation, and --of course--spelling. I've explained to the students that the sentences are "all-or-nothing-ventures," meaning everything about them must be correct. Each week, a 3/3 score will be possible for this activity.
Parent Teacher Gratitude
Thank you to every parent who took time out of your busy schedules to meet with me about your kiddo's academic progress. I want you to know I have the very best intentions for your child, and I sincerely want to listen to your concerns and offer suggestions for how to help your child. BUTTTT-- (as you probably noticed)--I never go over the report card! Nope. I personally believe grades are such a limited snapshot of what children can/cannot do. The grade card is yours to keep. Please sign the front of the small manila envelope and send it back in for next time. Again, it was such a pleasure visiting with each and every one of you.
We're Going on a Study Trip
On Monday, November 4, 2019, the Liberty Elementary School second graders will be taking a study trip to Civic Hall in Richmond, Indiana. Students will enjoy the newest musical by ArtsPower!, Judy Moody and Stink. It is a sold out show. With this in mind, chaperones will not be needed. The cost of this study trip is $2.00 per student. Students will need a packed lunch on this day. If you choose to have the cafeteria staff do this for you, they’d be happy to do so, but you must let them know in advance by indicating this on the permission slip that went home. Return both items together (the form and the $2.00) by Monday, October 28th.
Red Ribbon Week
Batman was in the building! He brought along his simple--but important--message for success.
Never give up.
Do the right thing.
Help people.
Don't be a bully.
This Saturday, Oct. 19, Batman and the Batmobile will make an appearance at the Union County High School gym from 10 a.m. to noon. He will take a photo with every child who attends. Everything is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.
As we continue Red Ribbon Week, we will have four more dress-up days, and they are listed below:
Monday, Oct. 28 - Use your head, wear red"
Everyone wear red on this day. We will be planting red tulips in the breezeway area of the school that should be in full bloom in April during Alcohol Awareness month. If you--or anyone you know--has a tulip-planting tool similar to the one pictured below, please send it in with your child on Monday. This will make our tulip-planting endeavor much easier.
Tuesday, Oct. 29 - "Stay in the game, play drug-free"
Wear jeans and jerseys to support your favorite team.
Wednesday, Oct. 30 - "Send a message, stay drug-free."
Texting and twinning - dress like a friend, and students will send a positive message to a friend on their paper cell phone.
Thursday, Oct. 31 - "Don't be tricked, drugs are not treat!"
Halloween parade - wear your Halloween costume (keeping with school guidelines listed below)
Halloween Parade
As you know, LES will be having their annual Halloween parade on Thursday, October 31. Remember...no fake blood, no weapons, and no p**p emoji costumes, please! Also on this day, we'll be having a special snack. Thankfully, we are able to put our school wellness policy on hold for this fun day. If you volunteered to send in a special snack, confirmation was sent in last week's folder. If you did not receive a confirmation, then you are "off the hook" for this particular day. Parents are welcome to view the parade, but we ask that you do so either in the auxiliary gym, or on the playground. Thank you for your participation in these memorable days for us.
Preschool, Anyone?
Union County College Corner Joint School District is exploring the possibility of offering preschool for the 2020-2021 school year that would be available to any family. If you are an interested family or know a family who might be interested, please have them complete the preschool interest survey which is located on the home page of our school website. Hard copies of the survey to complete will also be made available in our elementary schools and central administration offices.
The Union County Foundation Needs You!
Please help the Union County Foundation by taking a brief community survey. They want to know what YOU envision for the future of Union County. Click here to access the survey. If you have any questions or concerns, please call at (765) 458-7664 or email Executive Director, Danka Klein at dklein@ucfoundationinc.org.
If you complete the survey within the next THREE days,
you will be entered to win $250 in local gift cards!
