Why use Social Media in the classroom?
When used carefully, social media can be a useful tool rather than a distraction. Social Media helps brings current technology to the classroom. Since students are already using social media away from the classroom, integrating it into the classroom helps students learn best practices for social media and offers an interesting new twist on lessons. Also, with this will open learning for how to appropriately use Social Media.
1. Class Account
- Create a class handle - A handle is the username @Ms.Loweryclass or @LoweryVikings
- Make a decision if students will be able to tweet using the account or if you as the teacher will do the tweeting.
2. Class Hashtag
- If your students have a twitter account you could just have a class # that they can follow.
- Uses for a class # - Everyone could use their personal accounts. Easy to find conversations. Waterfall feeds in class.
3. Privacy
- Twitter is open
- The only way to keep privacy is to block your account to the public. You would have to grant access to all followers. When you tweet out it will only be seen by your followers.

1. Create a Class Page
- Students can join page to follow feed
- Parents can join page to follow feed
2. Privacy Settings
- Page will be open for viewing
- Set settings according to how you want the page to work
- Only you can post - or students can post - etc
3. Group
- A private group means that you must be invited to even know the group exists. This is like a private wall and feed for only the members.

- Public and Private
- Can select who sees the contents and comments
- Open to Public and anyone can see
