The staff at Clara Barton/Hawthorne would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy holiday season. However your family chooses to celebrate the season, or if you just enjoy the month of December in North Dakota, we want you to know that we value you as a member of our school family. Please enjoy your break and we will see you all in the new year. Stay safe and stay healthy.
Winter Break Meals
Fargo Public Schools (FPS) is offering free breakfasts and lunches to students during winter break. Meals must be pre-ordered by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 17. Meals will be available for pickup on Wednesday, December 23 at a variety of locations and times. Your pickup time and location can be selected when filling out the meal order form. Meals will include both cold and frozen food items. Student names and ID numbers are required at pickup. To order meals, fill out this Winter Break Student Meal Order Form.
Winter Weather Readiness
Parents, we appreciate your cooperation in helping your child be ready for winter weather. At both of our campuses, students go outside for recess each day for up to 20 minutes. We currently send students out until the combined temperature and wind-chill reaches –15 degrees. This means that our students must be ready for the cold. Boots, hats, mittens, scarves, and snow pants are important items while staying warm during winter play. Thank you for helping your child be weather-wise.
Winter Recess Expectations:
With the snow comes new recess expectations….
- Students will take advantage of outdoor recess as long as the temps are –15 degrees or higher. Please wear appropriate winter clothing. Students are only allowed to stay inside with a doctor's note.
- Children with boots may play in the snow. Those in shoes will stay on the sidewalk.
- Only mother nature can throw snow!
- You are welcome to play on snow hills as long as there is no pushing or digging of interior tunnels.
Counselor's Corner
Listed below are the topics of counseling lessons for the month of December.
In kindergarten students will be able to identify how to show kindness to others when they are having uncomfortable feelings such as mad or sad.
In first grade, students will learn how to show concern and compassion for others and how to accept responsibility if they hurt someone’s feelings.
In second grade, students will continue to determine others’ feelings by using physical, verbal and situation clues, and also be able to name their own feelings as either the same or different that others’ feelings. Students will also be able to identify ways that they can show compassion for friends and classmates.
In third grade, students will learn how to show respect for others people’s preferences and ideas.
In fourth and fifth grade, students will demonstrate how to use strategies to help them calm down if they are upset and also how anger and worry can affect the body.
Have a wonderful Holiday Season!
