Biographies and Helen Keller
This week the campers got a chance to explore the genre of biographies and learn about a very special girl named Helen. We created a list of the elements a biography would have and put our knowledge to use researching a favorite author of ours: Melanie Watt! The campers partnered up using our iPads and computers. They read and discussed what they learned and then took down notes to share when we met back together. You can see us at work on SeeSaw! Monday we will check out where Mrs. Patterson houses the biographies at the HC library!
I wish you could have bee a fly on the wall Thursday morning! We had our 4th grade buddies with us and they partnered up to hep us work on our word study review. After practicing the pattern words, they then created great new words based on the patterns! The campers worked hard on this challenge and the 4th graders took their job very seriously! Great partner work! This week we will review blends during word study.
Check out your camper's SeeSaw portfolio! We have new items added!

Perimeter and Area
This week we concentrated on area and perimeter with rectangles. We learned how to use a ____ by ____ formula. For example if we had an area of 5 by 4 , we could create a rectangle using graph paper. We would make 5 rows going down and 4 columns across. Next step, we would create the same length sides across and complete the rectangle. In the same way we could measure a rectangle by checking the units going down on the left side and across on the top side. To find the area, we can use repeated addition and even try multiplication to determine the area. Great discovery work! Next week we will complete this work with circumference of circles and a little data lesson. We will test on this unit thus week as well!
One more 40 minute subtraction time test under our belts! Many of the campers are reaching their goals and even surpassing them! The goal is to complete 38 problems in just 3 minutes. Nightly practice with the triangle cards in the zip pocket in their binder for just 10 minutes will go a long way to develop fluency and accuracy when calculating. Great practice can also be found when playing Kakooma or Math Magician on our Links for Learning.
If you have anything to measure this vacation, let your campers help! They are getting very accurate, love to try out different measurement tools, and would love the practice!
