Principal's Message

Hello CMS Families,

As we begin the month of February please join us in recognizing and celebrating Black History Month! President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout history”. February has provided a distinct opportunity to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and their invaluable contributions to our country. Your student(s) will spend time in their classes throughout this month recognizing just that. Here is more information on the Origins of Black History Month.

While certainly there are familiar names we frequently associate with this month, such as MLK and Rosa Parks, there are also many others who have contributed extraordinary accomplishments for the African American community. One person whose name is not easily recognized is Claudette Colvin. In Alabama during the 1950's, Claudette was instrumental in the civil rights movement . Before Rosa Parks Claudette at 15 years old refused to give up her seat on a bus, here is more on the inspiring story.

Finally, one simple way that you can continue celebrating and learning about Black History Month with your family is through small weekly activities. Here is something for Week 1.

Week 1: Read a book by a Black author or illustrator and below is how you can check out a library book from CMS. Books offer a fun and easy way to introduce your children to new cultures and to help them explore the experiences of people from different backgrounds.

Kind Regards,

Johanna Castillo & Katie Johnson (CMS Counseling Intern)

NEW!!! Counseling Corner

Hello Families!

As you may already know, during the month of January the community class theme has been “Growth”. Over the past week, community classes have shifted to discussing different “Sources of Strength”, meaning the things or parts of our lives that we draw strength from.

Each day of community class focused on a different source of strength. These included positive friends, physical health, and generosity. Thursdays lesson included viewing a short film on generosity. Moving into next week this theme will continue and students will learn about additional sources of strength.

Thinking about different sources of strengths, may have some of you wondering what community resources are out there that might be helpful during this time. Multnomah County has several community resources available that could possibly benefit you and your family.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if your family is in need of additional resources during this time of year. And, if you have any questions or concerns about your child, please reach out to their grade level counselor for support!

This will be a drive up event, families will enter CMS grounds from SE 182nd AVE, entrances from SE Brooklyn ST & 179th AVE will be closed, students will be flagged to come down their vehicle, enter the gym, take the picture, and then exited to their vehicle. It is important that family members do not get off their vehicles as this will slow down the process and cause traffic jam. Support with School: Northwest Family Services

Northwest is continuing to offer the Stay On Track Group ( SOT) this Winter beginning January 7th, 2021. We will continue to host a weekly, hour session specifically for our identifying female Middle School students.

Every Tuesday we meet from 3:00pm- 4:00pm, and we have discussions on life skills. Such as: homework help, drug prevention, positive coping skills. We formed it in an engaging way for our students, all while using research evidence based curriculum. We will have guest speakers, have arts and crafts, and after 10 sessions, we will have a fun virtual winter party! It is a small, intimate group, no more than 12 students. This way it can stay small and we all are able to have valuable conversations. This group is such a great opportunity for students to still “social” interact with students their own age, while learning real life skills.

I have attached our flyer if you’d like to share it in your newsletter, with other co-workers, or with families that you believe will benefit from this program. If students are interested in registering, please send them my way and I can help with the registration process.
