Clubs and Sports Updates

Free to Be

Free to Be at Daniel Wright is a support and social group that provides safety within our school. Free to Be is for LGBTQAI+ and straight allies to promote respect and inclusion within our school community. Our mission is to create a more united and accepting environment for all people, regardless of orientation or gender identity, through education, support, social action, advocacy, and leadership. The group meets next from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 in room 131 with Mrs. Cole and Miss Funk.

Math Club

The Math Club invites seventh- and eighth-graders to attend an introductory meeting after school on Monday, Oct. 21 in the library. There is no tryout. The purpose of the team is to explore a variety of math problems and have an opportunity to participate in math competitions. Please register for the Math Club through the RevTrak Web Store.

Science Fair

There will be an informational meeting after school Tuesday, Oct. 22 for seventh- and eighth-grade students interested in participating in the Science Fair. Please meet in Mrs. Cheifetz's room, 110. The meeting will end in time students to take the PASS bus home. Please contact Mr. Beno, Ms. Kantor, Mrs. Namkung or Mrs. Cheifetz if you cannot attend but are interested in participating. The Science Fair allows students to work independently to perform scientific steps in order to learn more about their chosen problem, perform an experiment or design a new tool to solve a problem, and then analyze their results.

Spirit Team

Daniel Wright Spirit Team tryouts for seventh- and eighth-grade students begin Friday, Oct. 18. Students must have a physical on file in order to tryout. Please contact Sarah Kantor at skantor@d103.org with any questions.

Bus Drivers Carry the World’s Most Precious Cargo

Parents, please invite your children to write a note to their bus driver in honor of Bus Driver Appreciation Day Friday, Oct. 18. The D103 PTO will honor our bus drivers with a lunch on Thursday, Oct. 17. We ask that you please print this note, personalize it and give it to your child’s bus driver on Thursday or Friday.


  • Don't miss After Dark from 3:35 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18. Sign up now through the RevTrak Web Store for the $12 per student event. Please see the DW News bulletin for details. This fundraiser will support "Adopt a Family", which is run through the Vernon Area Township.

  • Daniel Wright invites the community to a special afternoon concert from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 in the school cafeteria. Students involved in our music programs will entertain our guests. Show Choir, band, chorus and orchestra members will perform. Refreshments will be served. Please RVSP to kbuffa@d103.org.

  • Join us for coffee with Principal Blackley from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28 if your child is new to Daniel Wright. Please click on the Google Form to register.

Cultivating Empathy in Your Child

Learn from a national presenter on the skill of empathy and how it is the key to raising compassionate, courageous, resilient and successful children. Author Michele Borba will speak about her new book, "UnSelfie: Why Empathic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World". The evening presentation, intended for parents of students in grades 6-12, is scheduled for the SHS Performing Arts Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Impact of Marijuana Legalization on Children

Attend this powerful seminar on Marijuana 2020 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 to learn how the legalization of marijuana will impact our families.

Dr. Susan Sirota, pediatrician and assistant professor at Northwestern Univiserty will answer questions like:

  • How does marijuana impact the developing brain of children and teenagers?
  • How is today’s marijuana different than the marijuana of prior generations?
  • What topics should we consider as we discuss the legalization of marijuana with our children?
  • What impact will legalization have in our community?
