D103 schools are closed on Monday, Oct. 14 to observe Columbus Day and on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for a teacher institute day. Classes will resume on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Breast Cancer Awareness
Join Daniel Wright walkers on Sunday, Oct. 13 for the American Cancer Society Walk to Fight Breast Cancer at Independence Grove. So far, the team has raised over $1500 in donations!

ALICE Drill
Daniel Wright will conduct a school-wide ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Safety Drill on Friday, Oct. 18. During the October drill, some DW teachers, building staff, and students will practice evacuating the building, others will practice barricading the classroom door and discuss using evasive distractions to counter (and get away from) an armed intruder. We will be conducting this drill under the supervision of the Lincolnshire Police Department. Please read the DW News Bulletin for more information about the drill.

Bus Drivers Carry the World’s Most Precious Cargo
Parents, please invite your children to write a note to their bus driver in honor of Bus Driver Appreciation Day Friday, Oct. 18. The D103 PTO will honor our bus drivers with a lunch on Thursday, Oct. 17. We ask that you please print this note, personalize it and give it to your child’s bus driver on Thursday or Friday.

Don't miss After Dark from 3:35 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18. Sign up now through the RevTrak Web Store for the $12 per student event. Please see the DW News bulletin for details. This fundraiser will support "Adopt a Family", which is run through the Vernon Area Township.
Daniel Wright invites the community to a special afternoon concert from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 in the school cafeteria. Students involved in our music programs will entertain our guests. Show Choir, band, chorus and orchestra members will perform. Refreshments will be served. Please RVSP to kbuffa@d103.org.

Cultivating Empathy in Your Child
Learn from a national presenter on the skill of empathy and how it is the key to raising compassionate, courageous, resilient and successful children. Author Michele Borba will speak about her new book, "UnSelfie: Why Empathic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World". The evening presentation, intended for parents of students in grades 6-12, is scheduled for the SHS Performing Arts Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Impact of Marijuana Legalization on Children
Attend this powerful seminar on Marijuana 2020 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 to learn how the legalization of marijuana will impact our families.
Dr. Susan Sirota, pediatrician and assistant professor at Northwestern Univiserty will answer questions like:
- How does marijuana impact the developing brain of children and teenagers?
- How is today’s marijuana different than the marijuana of prior generations?
- What topics should we consider as we discuss the legalization of marijuana with our children?
- What impact will legalization have in our community?
