Celebrating Alaska Native Heritage Month

Fall Into A Good Book

Sayeik Gastineau students enjoyed an in-person book fair in October, thanks to Scholastic Books! Many titles sold out and Ms. Ferguson selected some of the most popular books for the library, too! She is busy cataloging them now and getting them on the library shelves. A big THANK YOU to parents for all their support during our book fair. We weren’t able to have parent volunteers this fall, but hopefully next time. Students are already asking when the next book fair will be. Stay tuned - the Winter Book Fair will most likely happen in February!

Battle of the Books (BoB) Club

BoB Club began on November 5th, but it's not too late for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to join. The BoB Club meets after school on Wednesdays and Fridays in the library from 2:35-3:40 PM. The activity bus leaves school at 3:45 PM. Students are encouraged to come to both weekly meetings, but not required.

BoB Club will not meet over Winter Break, but students are encouraged to read/reread the 12 BoB titles. The school BoB will be in mid-January and the district BoB will be the last week of January. BoB Club ends on February 15th with the Alaska State BoB.

Ask Ms. Ferguson for a permission slip!

NEW Positive Covid Case Protocol

As of last week, if there is a positive Covid case in your child's class, there is now a "test to stay" option available to families. A parent/guardian will need to come to school to administer (staff are not authorized) an antigen/rapid test, with results within 15 minutes. If negative, your child can remain in school. You will also be sent home with rapid tests to administer before school for the remainder of the quarantine period and if negative, students will not have to quarantine at home. Families also still have the option to quarantine at home for the designated number of days.

Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics Next Week

Another round of free pediatric Pfizer vaccine clinics for all Juneau youth ages 5-11 is happening on Monday, November 29 (evening); Tuesday, November 30 (evening); and Saturday, December 4 (morning). Appointments are also available Monday-Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:30-4:00 at the Juneau Public Health Center (by Twin Lakes). Register at juneau.org/vaccine.

Substitute Teachers Needed

The Juneau School District is experiencing a significant shortage of substitute teachers and Sayeik Gastineau staff is feeling the pinch. Please consider applying to become one at juneauschools.org (District Information, Employment Opportunities, Substitute). You can even specify only subbing at Sayeik Gastineau, just in your child's class, or even for half a day. Help spread the word!
