The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - October 11, 2020
A Note from Principal Welch
Dear Families,
Thank you for continuing to partner with us as we move through our school year. It takes all of us working together to ensure the best education for our students.
I want to thank you for your understanding as we had to postpone our book circulation launch this past Thursday. I am excited to share we are ready to lunch this Thursday, October 15. If you haven't done so already, please visit the Google Form below to request your books for this week. If you had previously completed this form, we plan to deliver your student's books to the stop you previously requested. When I last looked, we only had about 50 students who had not requested a stop to pick-up their books. We would love to provide each of our student's books! If you have questions, please email Mrs. Sterling.
I also want to say thank you to those volunteers who are planning to assist at our book stop locations. Please remember to keep a social distance and wear your face covering. We want all our Sailors to continue to be safe and healthy.
I hope you will consider joining our PTA meeting this coming Tuesday, October 13, beginning at 7:00 PM. The Zoom link should be shared soon on our Cottage Lake PTA facebook page. We welcome all families!
I hope you all have a fabulous week ahead!
Take Care!
Jen Welch, Principal

Parents Active in Cooperative Education (PACE) 2020 Virtual Information Night
Parents Active in Cooperative Education (PACE) is an elementary enrichment program offered by the Northshore School District for students in grades 1-5.
The hallmarks of PACE include an enhanced educational experience due to high parent involvement, enrichment activities, encouragement for students to become self-motivated learners and a strong sense of community among families and staff. PACE is located at three sites in the district with feeder patterns from all Northshore elementary schools. PACE families commit to annual program support. Family volunteering may be either in the classroom, outside the classroom, or--new this year!--virtually from your home, as based on parent's availability and interest.
To find out if PACE is a good fit for your family and to learn more about the enrollment process, you are invited to attend the PACE Virtual Information Night hosted by Wellington Elementary Tuesday, October 20th, from 7:00-8:30 PM.
Anyone interested in attending the Wellington Info Night should contact enrollment@pacewell.org. The zoom meeting information will be sent to our registered attendees prior to Info Night.
For more information about the PACE program please visit http://www.nsd.org/PACE or contact enrollment@pacewell.org
Highly Capable testing
Below is a message from the Highly Capable office.
We want to remind you that we are currently accepting referrals for highly capable testing for the 2020-2021 school year. Eligibility would begin in the 2021-2022 school year. Our referral window closes Friday, October 16th. We intend to universally screen grades K, 1, and 5. If your child qualifies for testing after they are universally screened, we will need your permission to test for highly capable services. Below is a link to our website for testing and referral information.
If your student is currently single qualified (ie: reading OR math only), we need your permission to test them in the second content area. If your student is NOT currently qualified in either content area, we need your permission to screen AND test (grades 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7).
If you are a dual qualified student, you do NOT need to refer your student. You are already qualified. You also do NOT need to complete the permission to participate form if you have already done so for this calendar year.
Referral form:

As always, please feel free to send any questions to our email at hicap@nsd.org

•• REPEAT of District News ••
Becoming a volunteer
At Cottage Lake, we have always had a very strong foundation of classroom and PTA volunteers. This year, we are all thinking outside the box and looking for new, creative ways we can welcome volunteers into the remote classrooms. As our classrooms continue to establish routines and systems, teachers will be ready to think about how volunteers could be helpful to them.
To prepare for becoming a volunteer, there are several steps we need you to complete. One important note is that our background check form will need to be updated EACH YEAR! In the past, we have asked for them to be updated every two years, but to keep our information the most up-to-date, this is a shift we are making district-wide.
Please visit this NSD LINK to find all the steps you will need to follow to complete your volunteer paperwork. Please click on the bar that says, "Online Volunteer Application Process" for all the steps that need to be completed.
Thank you for considering becoming a Cottage Lake volunteer!
Permission to Release Student Directory Information
Each year, the District provides an opportunity for families to opt out of releasing their student's directory information. Historically, this has been a paper form that families return to their school’s main office. This year, we’ve transitioned the form online! Below are the three ways families can complete this Opt-Out information:
- Families can choose to complete the form entirely online,
- Families can print the form or complete it via a fillable PDF and email a copy back to their school office, or
- Families can request a paper copy to complete.
In all of these cases, you are not required to send or take a paper form back to your student's school during this pandemic. Should you decide to complete the form, selecting one of the "opt-out" options for your student's information, we encourage you to follow up with your school's office to confirm your form was received.
Forms must be submitted by October 15. Forms will be accepted after the deadline, but the District cannot be responsible for the release of Directory Information if the Permission to Withhold Student Directory Information form is received after the October 15 deadline of the current school year.
Visit our District website for more information and to view the form.
Need Technology?
Does your Cottage Lake Elementary student need a device for online learning? Please use the link below to sign up and sign the waiver. After you submit your form, Mr. Paganini will be in contact with you to set a pick-up time for you. For students in Kindergarten & Grade 1, we are issuing iPads. For students in Grade 2 through Grade 5, we are issuing Chromebooks. Students will keep these devices at home until we return to school.
Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, we are offering free meals for ALL children ages 18 and younger. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. This is GREAT news for each of our families; these are your tax dollars at work. I am so pleased this funding has been continued, allowing us to extend these meal services until the end of December.
For quick links:
- CLICK HERE to place an order for DAILY MEALS. [The order window time will be 2:00 PM-11:59 PM the day prior to meal pick-up. Order include breakfast and lunch, including 16oz of milk. Orders placed for a Friday pick-up will also include meals for the weekend.]
- CLICK HERE to place an order for WEEKLY MEAL PACKS. [Weekly Meal Packs will include breakfast and lunch for an entire week, including a gallon of milk. The order window will open at 2:00 PM every Wednesday and close at 2:00 PM every Thursday. Pick up for these meals will be on Wednesday the following week.]
