Curriculum Corner
Reading:
- This week is Week 5 of Unit 4. We are reading a novel this week and part of next week. The novel is titled, Sarah, Plain and Tall. It supports our essential question for the week: How can we learn about life in the past from fiction? This is a great read that the students will love! There will be a question packet to accompany the daily reading assignment. Please help your child stay on top of this homework!
- We will continue to work on comparing and contrasting during centers this week. We will also look at metaphors and how they can enhance our writing.
Spelling:
- Our spelling pattern this week is soft c and g. Please spend some time helping your child study. Students may also practice by using Spelling City. The link can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. Our word lists can be found under Amber Fleck.
- Due to scheduling, our Spelling Tests will now be on Fridays!
Grammar/Writing:
- We are continuing work with main and helping verbs this week, especially focusing on irregular verbs.
In writing, we continue to focus on informative writing. We will begin partner writing this week.
- We are continuing our study of multiplication. Watch for flashcards in your child's binder. Please study these with your child for 10-15 minutes every night. Thanks for your support at home!! Mastering multiplication in third grade is a necessity for students to thrive in the upper grades.
- We are continuing our study of fractions! This is a HUGE standard for third graders. We will move on to work with equivalent fractions and fractions on a number line.
Social Studies:
- We are finishing up our study of Native Americans with the Shawnee and Mound builder tribes. The students did an OUTSTANDING job on the test last week!! Please look for these in folders tomorrow!!
- We will spend the remainder of the week focusing on some important people to tie into Black History Month.

Kindness Challenge
This year, students at Ireland Elementary will be completing the Kindness Challenge again. We did this challenge a few years ago, and I am positive we can all complete the challenges this year! This week's challenge is...
When you see a police officer thank him/her for keeping us safe!
At the end of each week, students who have completed the Kindness Challenge for that week will get to put a sticker up for that act. Kindness is free...sprinkle that stuff everywhere!
