The SUPERPOWER of Yet
K-12
Big Idea
Encourage growth mindset in your classroom community from the start!
What are some things you can do? What things can't you do...yet?
Directions
Play the YouTube video link below of the read aloud "Giraffe's Can't Dance" (or read the picture book aloud to the class). Discuss what Gerald could and couldn't do well at the beginning of the book. Then show how Gerald discovered that what he couldn't do was just something he couldn't do well... yet!
Have students brainstorm skills they want to posses, but have not yet mastered.
Use this: Things I Can't Do...Yet form
Next, have students scaffold their thinking from things they can do to things they can't do yet. Use these graphic organizers to help:
For primary students, use the I Can writing page
For intermediate students, use The Power of Yet
Click here for the PDF of The Power of Yet
Turn these planning pages into a rough draft, then a final draft and display them in your classroom or in the halls for everyone to be inspired! See examples below. Watch these steps in process here!
Have students revisit their original I can/I can't statements throughout the year, or make new ones once they've reached their goals!
