Some tips/opening lines/get the kids talking about school:

1) "Let's see what you brought home."

2) "Show me what you have for homework."

3) Describe a book or chapter you enjoyed today in workshop.

4) "Tell me what you learned that you'd like to know more about."

Maker Space Update
