Mother's Day 2022

Happy Mothers' Day to all who hold this title so near and dear to us all. Whether you are a mom, function as a mom, have a mom, had a mom, or know a mom, you know the level of love, sacrifice, and passion that comes with this role and is invested in our children. Every day I am amazed at the heart and soul the mommies of this community pour into our children - whether it is from the role of parent, educator, or support staff. We may approach what we do from different perspectives, but the commonality is that we ALL love every single child in this school. So let us continue to work collaboratively for their benefit to ensure their success!

EXCEL family, this week, someone in our school community was diagnosed with COVID-19. Although we did not have any reported related cases, we mustn't get too relaxed with activities that mitigate the spread. Since the practice of contact tracing has needed in PGCPS, we have to rely on each other even more to keep our community safe. Every day, we have dozens of children who regularly come to school without a mask.

Beginning this week, we will begin to individually reach out to those parents whose children continually come to school unmasked, putting themselves and others at risk, to determine what barriers prevent families from complying with this district-wide requirement. We are committed to providing strategies to support families with this effort.

In the meantime, please find the link to the community letter for this most recent reported case below. Thank you once again for supporting us in keeping our community safe.

MCAP Assessment Season Is Almost Done

The Maryland MCAP assessment of entire class sections will be completed this week when our 8th graders finish the new Social Studies assessment. From this point, students who missed sessions over the last two weeks will be taking make-ups. In addition, we will soon be embarking on our typical end-of-year assessments like iReady, NWEA Map, and NWEA MAP Fluency. Ms. Hite, our School Test Coordinator, and the classroom teachers will keep you posted on individual testing schedules. As usual, we ask that you take special care to ensure your children are on time and present on all days, but especially on those days.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week Thank Yous

A special thank you goes out to all the parents who showered the staff and teachers with love this week. Internally we wanted to make sure we took care of our teachers, but you all added the icing on the cake! A special shout-out goes to the EXCEL PTSO, who prepared a lovely table of gifts and treats for our staff on Friday. We appreciate your efforts in partnering with us!

A Note From Principal Sothern

EXCEL families, I would also like to thank you for all the expressions of love and condolences extended to me during the passing of my dear mother-in-love, Mrs. Patricia Sothern. I appreciated the time I was able to spend supporting my husband and his six siblings as we celebrated her incredible life on Friday, April 29th. The emails, inbox messages, text messages, cards, fruit baskets, and flowers brought a smile to our faces each day. As today is Mothers' Day, we continue to smile at the thought of her memory. Be sure to celebrate your families and take advantage of every waking moment with your loved ones.
