COVID-19 UPDATE
EXCEL family, this week, someone in our school community was diagnosed with COVID-19. Although we did not have any reported related cases, we mustn't get too relaxed with activities that mitigate the spread. Since the practice of contact tracing has needed in PGCPS, we have to rely on each other even more to keep our community safe. Every day, we have dozens of children who regularly come to school without a mask.
Beginning this week, we will begin to individually reach out to those parents whose children continually come to school unmasked, putting themselves and others at risk, to determine what barriers prevent families from complying with this district-wide requirement. We are committed to providing strategies to support families with this effort.

Virtual IB Primary Years Program (PYP) Parent Session This Week!
Learn more about the PYP Programme (grades 1-6) at EXCEL Academy, including the process for our school to become Authorized as an International Baccalaureate School (which will occur in the Fall of 2022). The event will be Tuesday, May 10th at 6:00 p.m.

UPDATE: Spring Concert/Evening at the gallery
Next week our scholars will be presenting their annual Spring Concert and evening at the Gallery presentations.
Please note that the Spring Concert will be held in person for musicians, their families, and EXCEL staff and charter board members. Evening at the Gallery will be held virtually.
We look forward to sharing the content of the scholars' rigorous and beautiful work next week!
Career Day is Coming -VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Career Day is on Friday, May 27, 2022, and will be held virtually for most presenters and in-person for presenters who have large equipment they may be willing to display on our field. The event will take place between 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. If you are interested in presenting, please reach out to Ms. Coleman (leshei.coleman@pgcps.org) or Mrs. Ruffin (damalia.ruffin@pgcps.org.)
PROMOTION SEASON IS UPON US!
Families, we look forward to hosting families of scholars in grades K, 5, and 8 for celebratory promotion (not "graduation") and moving up programs. We look forward to signifying students' transition in these grades, but please note there are still some restrictions we must implement with the events. Parents will be notified of the dates and details this week if they have not received them. Please refer to your child's teacher or grade-level chairperson if you have any questions.

A Note From Principal Sothern
EXCEL families, I would also like to thank you for all the expressions of love and condolences extended to me during the passing of my dear mother-in-love, Mrs. Patricia Sothern. I appreciated the time I was able to spend supporting my husband and his six siblings as we celebrated her incredible life on Friday, April 29th. The emails, inbox messages, text messages, cards, fruit baskets, and flowers brought a smile to our faces each day. As today is Mothers' Day, we continue to smile at the thought of her memory. Be sure to celebrate your families and take advantage of every waking moment with your loved ones.
