Play and Create
This week in Onward, we continue to focus on playing and creating. Like most of the other habits we've focused on this year, there is a connection to cultivating our resilience and to what is going on in our brains. So what is the connection between creativity and the brain? According to the Neuroscience of Creativity video, our brain networks seem to be doing this 3 things regarding creativity:
- They bend what we see.
- They break what we expect.
- They blend things with other things.
Lori Cohen, author of the blog Creativity Tools for Coaching: The MAKER Framework, designed a framework that integrates brain research, the uses of creativity in schools/organizations and essential coaching techniques into a process she calls the MAKER framework:
Mindset
Activate
Kraft
Explore
Reflect
In her blog, Cohen describes opening activities, deepening sessions, and bringing it all together through reflection. She states "Creativity opens up greater possibilities for transformation. What would happen if you invited creativity into your coaching practice?" Without a doubt, all those within our Bulldog family would benefit. What are we waiting for? You Deserve It! Our Kids Deserve It!

Author/Illustrator Terri Michels in Residence March 31, 2020
Imagine this, your students engaged in conversation with a popular children’s author or illustrator. Asking questions about book ideas, about characters in a book, about pictures matching the story. When authors and illustrators share ideas about writing and illustrating, students listen. A visit from an author or illustrator can expose students to a wondrous world of reading, writing and illustrating. As authors and illustrator come to speak to young people, they often inspire them to want to read great books and write with more confidence.
Students in local elementary classrooms meet an established author/illustrator who share their personal adventures of creating and publishing books. This program encourages the love of reading and inspires students to write and illustrate. They will share how they generate ideas that turn into stories, what inspires them, the publishing process, some of the challenges and the successes, trials and errors.
- Here is a sample statement that can be used to email or send home to parents. Note to Parents about Book Orders
