CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP - September 30-October 4, 2019
Mr. Hill's Missive
Hello First Program Community,
We started off our week with our fire drill. Members of the Cheongna Fire Department visited our school, observed our fire drill, and gave us feedback. They visit us yearly. What they were particularly impressed with was our visual system of green cards and red cards. Teachers who wish to signal that all students are accounted for simply raise and show a green card. This helps to improve the efficiency of our fire drills, and the fire department noted that they will suggest this system to be used by others in the future. Way to go, CDS! I should note, too, that both First Program and Middle/High School had successful fire drills on Monday.
Last weekend Mr. Baker, Mr. Cool and Mr. Hill accompanied the FP soccer players to Chadwick for a jamboree. The kids were fantastic. It was extremely hot out and the kids played four or five games each. Our players continue to be leaders in sportsmanship at the jamborees. I regularly hear from other coaches positively remarking on our players’ improved skills and continued exceptional sportsmanship. Well done, FP and thank you to all the wonderful parents for their support!
Grade 3 and 4 students began independently getting lunch last week! Teachers and administration facilitated the transition all week. Students in grades 3 and 4 now choose either Korean or Western food from the main cafeteria. They displayed wonderful manners and independence. Way to go grade 3 and 4!
All parents are invited to attend Jog-a-fest on Friday! Mr. T has sent out information about the event via Seesaw. Also see the event details below.

MAP Growth
MAP Growth results were shared on Friday with parents of students in grades 1234. This year we shared what is called the Family Report. Intended specifically for parents and guardians, the Family Report focuses on what families value most: clear information on a student’s performance—and how to encourage learning and growth.
A brief introduction explains the goal of the report, what MAP Growth is, and why students take MAP Growth. It also defines “achievement,” “growth,” and “RIT score,” so everyone is on the same page from the start.
Easy to navigate. A student’s progress is broken down by subject, while graphs show individual achievement and growth compared to the national average.
A list of questions is included to get conversations started among students, parents and teachers.

Jog-a-fest
On Friday October 11th, CDS FP will host the 2019 Jog-a-fest. This will be a half-day event, as students will be dismissed at 1:00 pm. The day will include jogging, team building events and games. Students should wear their House color shirts and come ready to run. Parents are encouraged to join in on the fun, as they can take part in the information session, run with the students and eat lunch with us. See you Friday!
Community: The students, parents and teachers work together throughout the day to achieve goals and complete tasks.
Collaboration: Students are encouraged to work together with students from different age groups. They will be divided into 4 different color teams which will provide students with different group dynamics than they are familiar with.
Communication: Students will need to express their goals, expectations and reflections for the day both on paper and with their peers and group leaders.
Critical Thinking: Students will take their average practice results and create realistic goals for the number of laps they expect to complete.
Character: Students will be encouraged to show sportsmanship and teamwork in many of the events planned. They will also need to lead by example and show good character to the younger students in their team.Friday, Oct 11, 2019, 08:00 AM

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Music, Grade 2, and our PKK1 Field Trip.
Music with Mr. Fejes
PK and K students have been finishing their unit on loud and quiet! They have been singing songs and playing games using loud and quiet sounds and have shown that they can identify loud and quiet in recordings as well.
1st grade students are working hard to differentiate between beat and rhythm and have taken the first steps in reading rhythmic notation. They have also explored different ways to use their voices.
2nd grade has taken a big step by learning the terms “measure” and “barline”! They’ve been supplying barlines in written music and learning about 2-beat meter through singing and movement!
3rd grade has been learning about meter as well, but in their case it’s 4-beat meter. They’ve also been introduced to the do pentatonic scale and have been using it to sing and play xylophones.
4th grade is also learning about meter. They’ve been using 3-beat meter to play a stick tapping game from New Zealand and have also created their own mixed-meter patterns using sticks. Finally, they’re beginning to explore minor mode with the la pentatonic scale.
PK K G1 Field Trip
PK, K and grade 1 visited Bucheon Botanical Garden last week. Students had the opportunity to observe different kinds of plants, learn about butterflies and make their own butterfly bracelet. After walking around the garden learning about the parts of a plant and what they need to survive, students went to visit the dinosaur area where they could see pictures, videos and some fossils. They also were able to look at insects, fish and different kinds of flowers.
Grade 2 by Ms. Bahr
Grade 2’s have been working hard on collaboratively making a map of a floor of the FP building. Since we’ve been learning about map concepts, they needed to incorporate a title, labels, a compass rose, key, and symbols into their map.
At the beginning of the project, the students walked through one floor of our FP building and wrote down important objects they saw in each room. They then came together with their small group and created a key with symbols from things the students noticed in each class. Once the student groups made a rough draft of their key, they were able to add the map concepts we discussed into a final draft of their FP map.
Students in 2B are really proud of all of their hard work, collaboration with their group, and details they’ve added into their FP building map!
