News from the Counselors - February 2016

Happy National School Counseling Week

Help us celebrate this year's National School Counseling Week 2016, from February 1-5, 2016. This national spotlight is designed to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). This year's theme is " School Counseling: The Recipe for Success." Each day this week we will be doing activities to bring attention to Heaton's counseling program.

A Treat for Staff on Monday

Please come outside our offices to get your special treat from us. It's our way to say THANK YOU for all that you do and supporting our work as school counselors.

Monday during ASAP

All 3 counselors will go from class to class introducing themselves briefly and introducing National School Counseling Week. We will have a jar of Hershey Kisses with us. Students will guess how many are in the jar and win the jar at the end of the week.

Taking the survey in ASAP

I have posted the student survey on the landing page of the Heaton Counseling page. The survey is serving two functions; to do a counseling needs assessment and to have kids make their entry for the number of Hershey Kisses in the jar. Students will go to the Heaton website on the same day as they would for checking grades on Mon (6th), Tues (7th) and Wed (8th) this week.

Additional info about the jar during assemblies that week

We will have the jar at the awards assemblies on Tues - Thurs. We will briefly talk about counseling, the week, and how to enter if they missed out.

Here's how to get to the link

Kids go to and click on the "Counseling Page" tab. They will then click "Student Survey". Here's the link to the page for your reference:

Upcoming Groups

We are excited to announce new small groups that will begin in mid-February. We will run multiple groups for 6th and 7th grade girls dealing with Relational Aggression aka drama! We will also be piloting a De-stress group open to all students dealing with anxiety with the intention to reduce stress and improve wellness. The students for the Relational Aggression group have been identified for this round, however, we are still recruiting students for the De-stress group and future groups. Students have the opportunity to sign up directly. We would love your referrals! Come and see the counselors with your recommendations for students in need of dealing with anxiety in healthy ways.
