Biddeford Police Department makes JFK Student's "Someday" Come True
John F. Kennedy School's (JFK) Resilience Coordinator Ashley Belanger helped to coordinate Mohamed's "Someday" wish to see the inside of a police car. Thanks to the partnership with the Biddeford Police Department, they offered to take it one step further and let Mohamed and one of his classmates take a tour of the station. Belanger said, "Mohamed is a very inquisitive child and it was heart-warming to see his face light up as he took the tour with Officer Angis."
In working closely with Transforming Rural Experience in Education (TREE), Biddeford Schools were introduced to the concept of “Somedays”. This concept of honoring student voice by making “Someday at school” wishes come true is one of the many trauma-sensitive, resilience-focused best practices explored by our partnership with TREE.
Resilience Coordinators focus their efforts on bridging professional learning in the classroom through the support of our youngest students, improving the overall school climate and implementing systems to reduce trauma around adverse childhood experiences, promote resilience, and increase positive outcomes.
COT Students Draw Crowd at Community Maker Faire
"This was a beneficial hands-on event for our students," said BRCOT Director Paulette Bonneau. "The students engaged with community members, proudly showcased what they have learned, and inspired younger youth to consider a future educational opportunity at the Center of Technology when they get to high school."
Biddeford Youth Stay Warm Thanks to Local Donors
"The teachers and school counselors who put in the requests for our students are so grateful for the generosity of the donors," said Director of Community Outreach and Development Karen Chasse. "The Knights of Columbus donated boxes of brand new coats last week, the Altrusa Club of Biddeford-Saco purchases clothing for students in need, and the Cartmill grant allows us to ensure our students are well-cared for without spending taxpayers money. Every child should be able to enjoy winters in Maine without being cold."
Marching Band Earns Silver Award After 10 Year Hiatus
Band Director Chris Ferrell said, "I cannot put into words how proud I am of these students. After 10 years without a band and Biddeford returns to the field and earns a Silver Medal. They grew beyond everyone's expectations and their hard work and dedication certainly paid off."
