ALICE Safety Drill
A Message from South Lyon East
October 26, 2021
.
Good morning SLEHS Families,
I wanted to take a moment to share that we will be conducting our first of three mandatory ALICE (Alert/Lockdown/Inform/Counter/Evacuate) safety drills tomorrow. SLEHS staff members will be reviewing these procedures in each class tomorrow. These are the same procedures we adopted and practiced in previous years.
At the beginning of first hour, we will announce the start of the first drill and all students will watch a short video which explains the ALICE protocols and provides visuals to increase student understanding. Staff will then provide information to students regarding the procedures. During this drill, students will practice the lockdown (barricade) procedure. They will, in their classrooms, identify items that will assist in preventing entrance into their respective rooms. There will be a discussion focusing on how they can use this procedure and how to maximize their safety while staying in their rooms. Teachers in all subsequent hours for the remainder of the day will briefly discuss options applicable to ALICE protocol in their respective classrooms so that students are prepared regardless of the classroom they are in.
On a later date, we will conduct a second drill, and the emergency notification system will be utilized. This drill will emphasize the importance of listening to additional announcements/information so that a decision can be made to respond to the potential threat. The teacher will guide students through a discussion regarding their options given the information that is provided.
Finally, our third drill will provide specific information regarding a specific threat to a specific area so that staff and students can utilize their knowledge to respond in the manner best appropriate based on their location and capabilities. This drill will create unique responses based on the situation and it will allow staff to debrief with students regarding what their options were and what they could be if the intruder was in a different location. This drill will emphasize the importance of listening to the adult(s) in the room. To conclude each drill, the adult(s) will debrief with students.
I wanted to provide this information in advance to strengthen your understanding of what we are reviewing with students and allow you the opportunity to have conversations at home.
Kind Regards,
Karen Fisher
