Friday Family Update
Dear WHS Families,
The Last Day of School - Friday, May 29th!
District 44’s last day of school (Remote Learning) is May 29. District 44 received word from the governor’s office this week that we DO NOT have to make-up days that we were closed due to COVID-19. Therefore, our final last day will be May 29.
WHS "Reverse" Parade - Friday May 29th- Save the Date!
On Friday, May 29th, WHS will host a “Reverse” Parade to bring closure to this 2019-2020 School Year. The parade route is pictured to the right.
Each family will have an opportunity to cruise the parade route during a designated time slot. It is important that assigned time slots are honored to allow this event to run as smoothly as possible. Time slots are as follows:
Last Names:
A - C: 9:00- 9:30 a.m.
D - G: 9:45- 10:15 a.m.
H - L: 10:30- 11:00 a.m
M -R: 11:15- 11:45 a.m.
S - Z: 12:00- 12:30 p.m.
Important Notes:
For the safety of everyone, social distancing guidelines need to be followed. All WHS family members are asked to stay in their vehicles!
Please follow the parade route. The beginning of the route is at the back of the school and is ONE- WAY route. Enter the route from Madison St and turn South on Stewart Ave.
All Kdg. - 4th Grade Families will turn left out of the circle drive and then exit west on E. Harding Rd.
Grade 5 Families ONLY will turn right after traveling through the circle drive. They will have an opportunity to park in the slanted spots so that the Grade 5 student can exit the vehicle to get their picture taken at the Hammerschmidt Sign. (These pictures will be made available to all 5th grade families)
Rain Date will be Monday June 1st
Pick-up of Student Items: Specific Details Coming Next Week
As a reminder, all parents have the opportunity to pick-up their student things on June 3. We are currently in the final stages of finalizing that pick-up plan. Please make sure to look for communication next week regarding your assigned time slot in which you will come to the school and pick-up your child’s items curbside.

Grade 5 Family Event- Virtual Video Premiere Party and Awards Presentation- Thursday, 5/28, 6:30 p.m.
Dear Grade 5 Families,
The Fifth Grade Farewell Committee has been working hard to provide an appropriate “Farewell” for our Hammerschmidt Graduating Class of 2020!
Part of the committee’s work included the creation of a special slideshow featuring our Grade 5 students over the years. Since we will not have the traditional opportunity to showcase the video slideshow at an “in-person” party, we are hosting a Virtual Video Premiere Party instead.
Please join the WHS Grade 5 Family Google Meet on Thursday night, May 28th to watch the video slideshow together. The video is approximately 20 minutes in length. The video will be followed by a short 5th Grade Awards and Recognition Ceremony. The entire event will not last more than 45 minutes.

5th Grade Families... PLEASE READ --6th Grade Orientation at GWMS
6th Grade Orientation at GWMS (Previously Known as Welcome to Westlake)
Below you will find a flyer that contains information about 6th Grade Orientation. All incoming middle school students are strongly encouraged to register and attend this event. That said, offering this event in-person is contingent upon current restrictions being lifted is subject to change.
Assistant Principal Named at GWMS
At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, Mrs. Carmen Abraham was approved to be Assistant Principal of GWMS starting next school year.
Mrs. Abraham currently serves as Community Parent Liaison at Madison Elementary. She brings to the position a variety of diverse experiences as well as a passion for the students of this district. She was one several highly qualified candidates who were considered for the position.
Mrs. Abraham will assume the role beginning July 1, with current Assistant Principal Scott Stehlik taking over as principal following the departure of Mike Fumagalli.
New Board Members Seated
I am excited to share with you the appointment of two new community members to the Lombard District 44 Board of Education. Please join me in welcoming these individuals to serve in this crucial leadership role.
James Robinette
Occupation: Principal Suburban Elementary District
Attendance Area: Pleasant Lane
Mr. Robinette previously served on the Lombard District 44 Board of Education. While he previously had to step down to complete his doctoral classes and achieve his school superintendent endorsement, Mr. Robinette is excited to re-join in service of our students and staff.
Priscilla Oliveros-Gallego
Occupation: Owner of Security Services Firm
Attendance Area: Madison
Ms. Oliveros-Gallego has a history of volunteering for the district, having served on the PTA. We are excited to welcome her to support our students and staff and share her knowledge, diverse experiences and perspectives.

We understand that our families are being inundated with information about all aspects of their lives during this challenging time. Therefore, we are committed to making sure you know where to go to find all the important communications related to your child's e-learning experience.
Our Remote Learning website now includes the "Communications Hub." Here you will find all district communications, listed in timeline format. We also continue to post to our own school websites.

If your device breaks or malfunctions….
Moving forward, should your device break, we ask that you visit the "Technology Support" button of the Remote Learning website. Here you will find helpful information to troubleshoot issues you may be experiencing. Additionally, you may complete a form if you are in need of more specific support.

Food Distribution: Change of Date & Extension of Service
PLEASE NOTE: BECAUSE OF THE MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY, FOOD PICK-UP WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS COMING TUESDAY, NOT MONDAY. AFTER THAT, WE WILL PROCEED WITH MONDAY PICK-UP.
Food will be provided to any family in need at Glenn Westlake Middle School from 9-11 am. During your visit, you will be provided a week's worth of food, which include breakfast and lunch options. No questions asked.
In addition to onsite food pick-up, we also provide food to families in need at three in town locations.
We will continue to provide weekly meals to all families in need through June, 30, 2020.

Take 5 Resource Videos for Parents!
The Glenbard Parent Series has established a GPS Take 5 video library highlighting presentations of their most recent speakers with bite-size videos for both students and families. A new thread to the video library is the Take 5 PREVIEW series videos from speakers to be hosted in the 2020-21 school year. The videos are filled with insights to assist families at this most challenging time. Posted today, find videos of Phylis Fagel author of Middle School Matters and Dr Tina Payne Bryson the author of the YES Brain: How to Cultivate Courage, Curiosity and Resilience In Your Child. New videos will be added regularly.
