News and updates for our RCS families 12-5-14

Have you added our Winter Concert to your calendar yet?

Don't miss the debut performance of Ripley's 3-6 Grade Chorus! The students have been showing grit and zest this year as they prepare for their upcoming winter concert, and they want to share their songs with YOU. It's taken a lot of time and hard work, but the students have happily been rehearsing during recesses and during the After School Program to get ready. Please mark your calendars for December 16th at 6:30 PM. We hope to see you there!

4th grade Poetry Slam

On Tuesday, November 25, 2014, our 4th graders held the first RCS Poetry Slam! The poetry slam was the culminating performance task to the first module that students completed in English Language Arts this year. Students, inspired by published poets, created and shared their own poems. In addition, some students read a poem written by the poet who motivated them with their writing. 4th graders read for their parents and the school community; we even snapped for our applause, like a real poetry slam! Miss Humbert and Mrs. Sabella were so pleased to host this event, and look forward to more slams in the future! Pictured above are students reading during the Poetry Slam. Pictured below, our attentive audience and families who were able to come. We thank them!

6th grade ELA Literacy Centers

During ELA 6th grade has been using literacy centers to help them improve comprehension. Students rotate through different centers such as fluency, word work, independent reading, show the rule, and complex text. 6th graders are becoming experts using the live scribe pens, “ magic pens,” to record themselves reading fluently with a partner. It was also an exciting week for 6th grade because Expeditionary Learning came to RCS to video tape 6th grade during literacy centers. Expeditionary Learning will be making a DVD that will go into the back of a book that other teachers will be able to view so that they can see how literacy centers work.
